The short answer
Best areas to stay in Amritsar
- 01
Golden Temple area (near the lake and sanctum)
Best for: Pilgrims and travellers wanting to wake early and be first at the temple
Unbeatable for proximity and atmosphere, with heritage guesthouses and small hotels. The trade-off is noise, crowds (especially during festivals), and limited parking. Check room size and lift access if travelling with elders. Very budget-friendly (₹500–₹1,500 per night) but expect basic comfort.
- 02
Hall Bazaar and Chhota Bazaar (old city edge)
Best for: Travellers who want bazaar atmosphere and walkable access to shopping
Close to the action, with restaurants and street food within steps. Hotels here are older, smaller, and noisier. A 5–10 minute walk to the temple. Good for adventurous travellers; less ideal for those seeking quiet or modern amenities.
- 03
Lawrence Road and Civil Lines area (central, quieter)
Best for: Families and seniors seeking calm, cleanliness and modern facilities
Leafy, planned areas with mid-range hotels, restaurants and hospitals. 15–25 minutes by car to the temple and bazaars. A good balance between convenience and peace. More hotel choice here for travellers who want air-conditioning and regular amenities.
- 04
Airport Road and GT Road (commercial areas)
Best for: Transiting travellers and those with a car
Business hotels and chain hotels. Far from the old city (20+ minutes by car) but convenient for short stays and vehicle access. Less atmospheric but very practical.

Before you book
What to check when booking for older travellers
- Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
- Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
- Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
- Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
- Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.

Comfort notes for Amritsar
- The Golden Temple is level and accessible, but crowds are intense, especially mornings and weekends. Go very early or on a weekday, and ask temple staff to help you find less-crowded entry points if you are less mobile.
- Plan one major sight per day and rest indoors during 1–4 p.m. when heat is strongest. Amritsar summers are tiring even for younger travellers.
- Hire a car and driver for Wagah Border and other day trips rather than relying on shared transport or autos. It gives you control over pace and a cool space to rest.
- Wear comfortable walking shoes (remove them at the temple) and socks or very light footwear. Marble can be extremely hot underfoot in summer.
