Why it matters
Why Sundardunga Glacier Trek is worth your time
The Himalayan glaciers in this region are retreating, and witnessing a glacier—even a smaller one—is a powerful experience of high-altitude geology and climate change. Sundardunga Glacier is one of the accessible glacial features in the Garhwal Himalayas, though it is remote and relatively small.
For trekkers, this trek represents the boundary between high-altitude trekking and mountaineering. It tests both physical fitness and altitude adaptation. The experience of standing above the clouds at the edge of permanent ice is unforgettable.
Plan your visit
How to experience it
This trek begins from Chopta or a nearby village, typically Tungnath side. The approach involves multiple days of high-altitude trekking, camping at intermediate altitude, and a final push towards the glacier. The actual glacier views depend on the season and altitude you can reach—full views of ice are only accessible to those comfortable above 3,500 metres.
Day 1 usually involves a drive to the road head and a trek to a first camp. Days 2-3 cover high-altitude meadow trekking, with camps at 3,000-3,200 metres. The final push to glacier views involves another 2-4 hours of trekking from camp, passing through sparse alpine terrain. The glacier itself may be a mass of ice in shaded ravines or, in late summer, a collection of smaller ice patches.
This is not a trekking-holiday style walk. It requires acclimatisation, fitness, proper gear and a guide familiar with the route.
Plan with confidence
Small decisions that make the visit easier.
- Hire an experienced guide from Chopta or Tungnath; do not attempt without one
- Acclimatise properly before attempting; spend at least 2 days at lower altitude first
- Carry proper alpine gear: insulated tent, sleeping bag rated for below-freezing, gaiters, crampons may be needed
- Bring high-calorie food and supplements; appetite decreases at altitude
- Arrange group permits and route advice with local trek operators
- Check weather forecasts and be prepared to turn back if conditions deteriorate
