Day 1: Fort and stepwells
Start early at the Taragarh Fort. Leave at sunrise and hire a jeep to reach Jaleb Chowk, then climb through the palace rooms to the fort ramparts for views over the city and Aravalli hills. Spend two hours inside, then drive down and walk to Raniji ki Baori (about 15 minutes) to see the famous stepwell with its carved pillars and descending flight of steps. Climb down partway if you are comfortable; the photographs from the mid-levels are spectacular. Have lunch in the old city near Charbhuja Nath Temple, rest for an hour indoors, then visit the temple in the late afternoon to see the devotional life of Bundi. Finish with an evening walk through the painted bazaar lanes and a sweet stop.

Day 1: Palaces and painted frescoes
Begin at dawn at Taragarh Fort and Palace. Take a jeep to Jaleb Chowk and explore the palace frescoes, which illustrate Rajput court scenes, hunting expeditions and mythological tales. The miniature painting style is unique to Bundi. Spend two to three hours. Walk down into the old city and visit Charbhuja Nath Temple, a 300-year-old shrine devoted to a four-armed form of Vishnu, positioned in the heart of the walled city. Climb the stairs inside if mobility allows; the views from the top level are good. Lunch and rest through the afternoon. In the late afternoon, drive to the edge of Nawal Sagar Lake to watch the Varuna Temple, which sits half-submerged in the water, and enjoy the light at sunset.
- 02
Day 2: Stepwells and lakes
Visit Raniji ki Baori in the morning, when the light is soft and shadows are long. Climb down to the third or fourth level to see the carved pillars and niches. On the return, stop at Nagar Sagar Kund, the twin stepwells nearby, which are older and less visited but equally impressive in their geometry. After lunch and rest, drive to Sukh Mahal on the bank of Jait Sagar Lake, a palace built as a summer retreat in the early 18th century. Spend an hour there, walk around the lake if you wish, and return to the city for an evening at Chaurasi Khambon ki Chhatri, the cenotaph of 84 pillars dedicated to a palace nurse, where the light in late afternoon illuminates the carved scenes.

Day 1: Taragarh exploration
Dedicate the full day to Taragarh Fort and Palace. Be there at opening time (usually 8 AM or so; check locally). Take a jeep to Jaleb Chowk and explore the palace apartments, with their painted walls and arched doorways. The Rang Vilas apartments have the finest frescoes. Climb to the fort for panoramic views, then rest in the shade of an archway or outside the fort. Lunch and rest indoors. In the late afternoon, walk down through the palace and pay a visit to Charbhuja Nath Temple. Evening walk through the bazaars.

Day 2: Stepwells and cenotaphs
Start at Raniji ki Baori. Spend an unhurried morning exploring the intricate carvings, standing in the cool chamber and looking up at the open sky above. Nearby, visit Nagar Sagar Kund's twin stepwells, both beautifully carved. After a light lunch, drive to Chaurasi Khambon ki Chhatri and spend time studying the 84 pillars, each one decorated with flowers, mythical creatures and divine figures. End the afternoon at a quiet café or garden. In the evening, visit a smaller, lesser-known stepwell such as Sukh Niwas Baoli or Jait Sagar Baoli if they are accessible; ask your driver or hotel for directions to the ones that are open.

Day 3: Lakes, temples and departure
Begin with Sukh Mahal on Jait Sagar Lake. Spend an hour there, watch the water and the light, and walk if you wish. If energy permits, visit Mandhata Balaji Temple on a hilltop (requires climbing or a very steep road; ask about jeep access beforehand). Alternatively, stay in the city and visit the smaller temples and bazaars you may have missed: Govind Dev Ji or Laxmi Narayan Temple. Have a leisurely lunch at a local restaurant. Spend the afternoon browsing for textiles, lac work and miniature paintings in the bazaar. Depart towards Kota, Ajmer or your next destination.

Pacing
Make the plan work for everyone
- Visit Taragarh Fort at opening time and take a jeep to Jaleb Chowk to avoid the walk up the ramp. Climbing inside the palace is moderate but doable with breaks.
- Raniji ki Baori has worn steps and is slippery if wet. Wear non-skid shoes and go partway down if the full descent seems too ambitious; the carvings are visible from several levels.
- The old city bazaar is crowded, narrow and uneven. Walk early in the morning, and bring a stick or walking pole if you use one; street vendors and livestock can make it tricky.
- Summers (April to June) are very hot; indoor museums, cool temple chambers and a shaded rest after lunch are essential. Never skip the midday break.
- Hire a car and driver for the full stay rather than relying on autos. It gives you a quiet place to rest and avoids the challenge of walking between distant sights in heat.
- Lake drives (Jait Sagar, Nawal Sagar) are peaceful and require no climbing. A late afternoon drive is excellent for gentle activity.
