Why Mullayanagiri Trek and Viewpoint is worth your time
Mullayanagiri is the highest peak in the Western Ghats, and trekking it is a pilgrimage for trekkers visiting the region. The peak sits at the edge of the plateau, and from it you see the interplay of coffee estates, forests, grasslands and the geography that makes the region ecologically unique and remarkable. Plan your visit
How to experience it
Start the trek early (5–6 am) from the village at the base, arriving by 4 am or the night before. The trail is well-marked and heavily used by local trekkers and tourists. The ascent takes 2.5–3 hours through grassland and eventually to the peak. The path climbs steadily with short breaks at rest spots.
The peak has a small temple and a viewpoint. On clear days, you see the Baba Budangiri range, the Mullayanagiri plateau, coffee estates below, and on the far horizon, the coastal plains. Sunrise from the peak is spectacular. Spend 1–2 hours at the top for photos and rest, then descend, which takes 2–2.5 hours. The descent is harder on the knees; take it slowly.
Guided treks are available through hotels or homestays and help with pace and safety. Solo trekking is possible but not recommended for inexperienced hikers.
Plan with confidence
Small decisions that make the visit easier.

- Bring snacks and energy food; there are no shops above the base village
- The descent is harder on knees; go slowly and use walking poles if you have them
- Mobile reception is patchy; inform your hotel of your trek plan
- Allow 5–6 hours; don't rush the climb
