How to experience it
Drive from Madikeri south toward the Kaveri River. The road passes through coffee estates and open farmland, and after about 40 minutes you reach the Nisargadhama boat jetty. Buy a ticket for the boat ride and entry to the island. A small motorboat or oared boat takes you across the Kaveri to the island landing—a 5-10 minute ride depending on water level.
Once on the island, follow the marked walking path that loops through the forest. The trees are tall and thick—teak, rosewood, bamboo and wild fig—and the undergrowth is lush. Birds are common: bulbuls, warblers, and occasionally larger birds like eagles. Monkeys live here and are habituated to people, though they are wild and can be aggressive if fed. Keep your distance.
The path is shaded throughout, making it feel much cooler than the river plains outside. The full loop takes about 45 minutes. Rest on the benches and listen to the forest. Return to the jetty for the ride back.
