Key hubs

Dharamshala airport and railway station

Nearest airport
Kangra Airport (DHM, also called Gaggal Airport), roughly 15 km southwest; flights to Delhi and Chandigarh. Chandigarh International Airport, ~250 km away, is the nearest major hub.
Railway station
No railway station in Dharamshala. Pathankot Junction, about 85 km south, is the nearest major railhead; the narrow-gauge Kangra Valley Railway connects Pathankot to nearby towns.
Getting around
McLeod Ganj is very walkable. A private car and driver is useful for trips to lower Dharamshala, Norbulingka, Kangra Fort and day trips; local taxis and autos also work well. Dharamshala Skyway ropeway connects upper and lower Dharamshala.

Easy transfers to and in Dharamshala

  • McLeod Ganj's lanes are steep and often narrow; wear comfortable, non-slip shoes. Consider taking a taxi to the main square rather than walking uphill from lower areas if you are not a keen walker.
  • Plan mornings for sightseeing, rest through midday, and gentle walks in late afternoon. The town has less relentless energy than other hill stations, which suits a slower pace.
  • Hire a car and driver for day trips to Kangra Fort or Palampur; it removes the stress of navigating and provides a cool rest space between sights.
  • Ask the airline or railway for wheelchair or porter assistance when you book, not on the day.
  • Pre-book the pickup from the airport or station, so nobody has to negotiate with drivers after a long journey.
  • Choose arrivals in daylight where you can, and keep the first afternoon free to rest.
