Why it matters
Why Half Moon Beach is worth your time
Half Moon Beach is part of Gokarna's appeal as a destination with a range of options for different traveller types. While Om is social and Kudle is a compromise, Half Moon is for those seeking a genuinely remote beach experience within walking distance of a town. It remains one of the least-developed beaches on this stretch of coast. The small crescent is tucked in the rocky headland, offering a sense of discovery and isolation that increasingly few places provide.
Plan your visit
How to experience it
Start from Om Beach early, around 7 am. Walk south via Kudle, then continue along the coast. The path gets narrower and more rocky as you leave Kudle behind. You will climb a small ridge and descend into Half Moon Beach, a small crescent surrounded by high rocks and cliffs. The sense of isolation is immediate.
There are usually just a few huts on the beach, run by locals offering basic shelter, tea and water. Set up for the day. The water is usually clear and quiet, ideal for swimming. There are few if any other visitors, especially on weekdays. The beach is sometimes used by fishermen in the early morning. In the afternoon, the light on the cliffs turns gold.
Return before dark. The walk back can feel longer when tired, so start heading back by 3–4 pm to reach Om before sunset.
Plan with confidence
Small decisions that make the visit easier.
- Wear sturdy, gripped shoes; the path is rocky and steep in places
- Start early and return before dark
- Bring water, snacks and sunscreen; facilities are minimal
- The huts offer shelter if needed, but basic only
- Swim when others are present, if possible
- Be prepared for a sense of remoteness; help is far away
