Gulmarg is two destinations in one. In summer, it is a lush meadow station where Kashmiri families come to escape the heat of the valley floors, and where walkers and riders explore the rolling slopes and forests. The name itself means 'meadow of flowers', and wildflowers carpet the high pastures from May to July. In winter, the meadow transforms: snow blankets the ground, the Gulmarg Gondola becomes one of Asia's highest cable cars, and skiers from across the region arrive for the season.

The Gulmarg Gondola is the centrepiece. It rises in two stages—the lower section to Intermediate Station and the upper section to the Top Station at roughly 3,650 metres—offering views that stretch to the Pir Panjal range and, on clear days, toward Nanga Parbat. The upper section is not always open; check the conditions before visiting. The cable car itself moves slowly, giving you time to soak in the panorama.

For older travellers, Gulmarg can work well as a summer retreat. The meadow is essentially flat and open, the air is cool, and a stay here pairs perfectly with gentler activities: a cable car ride, a walk through the grass, a picnic, or a drive to nearby viewpoints. Winter is cloudier and colder, and the town becomes quiet and focused on snow sports, though visitors can still ride the gondola and enjoy the snowy landscape.

A Gulmarg itinerary that leaves room for Gulmarg

01 1 day in Gulmarg
  1. Day 1: Gondola and meadow walk. Arrive early and head straight to the Gulmarg Gondola. Buy a return ticket and ride to the Intermediate Station (check if the upper section is running; it is sometimes closed due to weather or maintenance). From the top, walk a short distance across the meadow for views, or simply sit and absorb the landscape. Descend by late morning and spend the afternoon on a leisurely walk through the town's meadow area, following one of the low-level paths or simply walking across the open grass. Stop at a local restaurant or café for lunch and an evening tea. If energy permits, visit a nearby viewpoint such as Concrete Point for sunset, roughly a 30-minute drive from town.
02 2 days in Gulmarg
  1. Day 1: Gondola, meadow and evening stroll. Ride the Gulmarg Gondola to Intermediate Station in the morning, and if the upper section is open, take the second cable car to the Top Station for the full panorama. Spend time on the upper meadow, walk back down or take the cable car down. Return to town for lunch. In the afternoon, walk gently through the meadow or visit Concrete Point for views over the Pir Panjal. Spend the evening browsing the small bazaar near the town centre or resting at your hotel.
  2. Day 2: Nearby excursion and forest walk. Drive to Aharbal, a small waterfall and forest reserve roughly 20–30 kilometres away, and walk among the pine trees and streams. Return by midday. Alternatively, drive to Khilanmarg, a meadow viewpoint above Gulmarg, for a picnic and panoramic views (acclimatisation and a walking pace suited to the altitude are essential). Spend the evening relaxing, packing and preparing for departure.
03 3 days in Gulmarg
  1. Day 1: Gondola and high meadow. Dedicate the morning to the Gulmarg Gondola, riding to the Top Station if open and spending time on the high meadow. Walk among the meadow flowers (in season) or simply enjoy the air and quiet. Return to town for a long lunch and rest. In the afternoon, visit Concrete Point or another low-altitude viewpoint for sunset.
  2. Day 2: Forest and waterfall day trip. Drive to Aharbal waterfall, a small cascade set in dense forest roughly 20–30 kilometres away. Walk through the pine forest, listen to the stream and enjoy the greenery. Pack a picnic lunch or eat at the basic facility there. Return to Gulmarg by evening and rest.
  3. Day 3: Khilanmarg or a gentle local walk. If you are feeling energetic and have acclimatised well, drive up to Khilanmarg, a high meadow above Gulmarg, for more expansive views and a walk. Alternatively, spend a quiet morning walking the meadow at your own pace, visiting any sights you may have missed, shopping for local goods, and enjoying a final meal in town before departure.

Food and restaurants

Gulmarg's food is rooted in Kashmiri cuisine, with heavy use of local rice, meat, dried fruits and spices. Rista (meatball curry), wazwan (an elaborate meat feast), and mirch-moj (spiced prawns) appear on restaurant menus, along with simpler options like dum aloo and goat curry. Breakfast is often a simple bread and tea affair, though hotels serve omelettes and toast. The town is small, so restaurant choices are limited; most hotels serve meals.

For older travellers, ask your hotel kitchen to prepare milder curries and ensure meat is well cooked. Dal, rice and bread are usually available. Bottled water is essential, and the town has basic medical facilities, though serious illnesses may require a trip to Srinagar, roughly 2 hours away. Most restaurants can accommodate vegetarian needs if asked in advance. Fresh fruit and nuts are available in the small bazaar.

Markets, makers and what to take home.

Shopping

Gulmarg's bazaar is tiny and seasonal. In summer, you will find basic groceries, snacks, and tourist trinkets—pashmina shawls (often of mixed quality), woolens, and local crafts. Winter shuts down much of the commercial activity, as the town becomes focused on snow and skiing. For serious shopping, Srinagar's main bazaar, roughly 50–70 kilometres away, offers much more: authentic pashmina, carpets, embroidered fabrics, and Kashmiri papier-mâché. Prices in Gulmarg are higher due to limited supply; if you know you want something, buy it in Srinagar. The mountain air and quiet are why people come to Gulmarg, not for retail.

Small decisions that make Gulmarg easier

For parents and senior travellers

  • Check the Gulmarg Gondola status before visiting. The upper section is sometimes closed due to weather, maintenance or low visibility; in winter, cloud cover is common. Call ahead or check the operator's status for the day.
  • The altitude at Gulmarg town is roughly 2,650 metres, and the Top Station of the gondola is at roughly 3,650 metres. Consult your doctor before visiting if you have heart, respiratory or blood-pressure conditions. Ascend slowly, drink water, avoid heavy exertion for the first day, and consider avoiding the Top Station if you feel unwell.
  • Summer (June to September) is far more comfortable for older travellers than winter. Daytime temperatures are pleasant, skies are often clear, and the gondola is reliably open. Winter is cold (often below freezing), cloudy and snowy; the town is quieter but less accessible.
  • The meadow is flat and easy to walk on. Most of Gulmarg town is walkable at a gentle pace. If you cannot handle the altitude or do not want to trek, riding the gondola and sitting on the upper meadow is a complete, rewarding experience.
  • Hire a car and driver for your entire stay and for any excursions to Khilanmarg, Aharbal or other viewpoints. Roads are winding, and a familiar driver avoids stress.
  • Ensure your hotel has easy car access and is close to restaurants or has meal service. The town is small and sometimes lacking in late-opening eateries.
  • Bring warm clothing even in summer—the air is cool at this altitude. In winter, heavy coats, thermals and good footwear are non-negotiable.

Useful answers

Gulmarg FAQs

Is the Gulmarg Gondola safe?

Yes. The cable car is regularly maintained and operated by trained staff. It is one of the highest in Asia. In poor weather or high winds, it may close for passenger safety; never board during a closure. Pregnant women, those with vertigo or heart conditions, and anyone feeling unwell should consult a doctor before riding.

What is the cost of the gondola ride?

Fares vary by season and change frequently. Expect roughly ₹500–₹1,000 per person for a return ticket (Intermediate Station) or ₹800–₹1,500 for the upper section; exact prices are best confirmed at the ticket window or with your hotel. Children and seniors may have discounts; enquire at the office.

Can I walk from Gulmarg town to the top of the gondola?

No. The walking trails above Gulmarg are for local shepherds and experienced trekkers, and the altitude and distance are not suitable for casual day-walkers. Use the gondola. Shorter walks within the meadow near town are easy and safe.

Is Gulmarg good for skiing?

Yes, in winter. Gulmarg has a small ski resort with lifts and rental equipment. Conditions vary—snowfall is unpredictable, and the resort is not as developed as European stations. Skiing here suits intermediate and beginner skiers more than experts. Check snow conditions and the resort's operational status before planning a ski trip.

Can I visit Gulmarg in winter without skiing?

Absolutely. Many visitors come in winter just to see snow, ride the gondola (weather permitting) and enjoy the quiet, snowy landscape. Bring very warm clothing, and note that the town is quieter and some services may close. The gondola may be closed for days if there is heavy snow or poor visibility.

How many days do I need in Gulmarg?

Two to three days is ideal. One day covers the main sights (gondola and a short walk) but feels rushed. Three days allows time for the meadow, a local excursion and genuine relaxation.

Is Gulmarg accessible for people with mobility issues?

Partially. The gondola cable car itself requires stepping in and out, but once at the top, the meadow is flat. The town is walkable but has uneven paths in places. Discuss your needs with your hotel and car driver; they can suggest the most accessible sights and routes. Lifts and accessible rooms should be confirmed when booking.

Can I visit Gulmarg as a day trip from Srinagar?

Yes, though a long day. Srinagar to Gulmarg is 50–70 kilometres and roughly 1.5–2 hours each way. A day trip works if you have only a few hours but means limited time for walks and exploration. An overnight stay is more relaxing and rewarding.
