Achyutaraya Temple was built in the 16th century by Achyuta Deva Raya, a ruler of the later Vijayanagara period. It is smaller than Vittala or Virupaksha but shows the same quality of design and carving. The hilltop location was chosen deliberately: to command views, to be visible from the city below, and to make the climb itself part of the devotional experience.
The temple is also a vantage point for understanding the site's overall arrangement. From the summit, you can see how the temples, palaces, gateways and walls were positioned to create sacred and ceremonial pathways through the landscape.

How to experience it
The walk up is steady and unrelenting, so pace yourself. As you climb, the view behind you expands: Hampi's boulder-scattered terrain, the rivers and temples spread below. The temple at the summit is set on a raised platform with views in all directions.
The temple is modest in size but well-proportioned. The outer courtyard has colonnaded halls on three sides, and the inner sanctum is set back on the north side. The pillars show scenes of Vishnu in his avatars, and the detail is careful and precise.
After exploring the temple, stay on the hilltop for 15 minutes to let your eyes adjust to the scale of the landscape. The temples you have walked past or will walk to are all visible: Virupaksha in the distance, Krishnaa Temple to the west, the palace ruins to the south. This vantage point shows how deliberately Hampi's monuments were arranged across the terrain.
