   Day 1: Fort morning, old city afternoon

   Arrive at Mehrangarh Fort at opening time and take a jeep to Jaleb Chowk rather than walking the ramp. Spend two hours inside, then visit Jaswant Thada just outside the fort gate. Return to the old city for lunch at a rooftop restaurant with fort views. Spend the late afternoon walking through the blue lanes near Soorji Gate and browsing Johari Bazaar, pausing for kachori or sweets. End with evening chai at a chaiwala stall as the light softens over the old city walls.

2 days in Jodhpur

1. 01

   Day 1: The fort and old city

   Be at Mehrangarh Fort at opening and allow three hours, then visit Jaswant Thada. Stop at Toorji Ka Jhalra stepwell on the way back (ask the caretaker to show you the levels). Have lunch and rest for an hour. In the late afternoon, walk from the Soorji Gate end of the old city through Johari and Rajinder Bazaars, stopping at Laxmi Mishtan Bhandar for sweets, then finish at the Clock Tower area as it illuminates at dusk.

   Day 2: Umaid Bhawan and beyond

   Spend the morning at Umaid Bhawan Palace, either touring the museum or simply walking the grounds, depending on your energy. Have lunch in the city centre. In the afternoon, visit Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park if you like geology and native plants, or Balsamand Lake for a gentler outing. As evening approaches, drive to a vantage point like Nawal Sagar or head back to the old city for a final bazaar walk and dinner.

3 days in Jodhpur

1. 01

   Day 1: Mehrangarh and Jaswant Thada

   Start at the fort at opening time, spend a full morning inside, then visit the attached Jaswant Thada cenotaph. Drop down to Toorji Ka Jhalra on the way back and spend a few minutes understanding the stepwell's design. Lunch and rest. In the late afternoon, walk the old city starting from Soorji Gate, wandering through Johari Bazaar and smaller lanes, pausing in courtyards and at small temples. Finish with chai and sweets.

   Day 2: Umaid Bhawan and lakes

   Visit Umaid Bhawan Palace in the morning, exploring the museum if interested. Stop at Ratanada Ganesh Temple, a simple but active temple in the old city if you like seeing working sacred spaces. Have a long lunch. In the afternoon, drive to either Kaylana Lake for a calm walk and water views, or Balsamand Lake further out. Return for an evening in the old city or a film at a local cinema if you are travelling with families.

3. 03

   Day 3: Mandore and temples

   Drive north to Mandore Garden, about 9 km away, to see the 16th-century cenotaphs and gardens in a parkland setting. This is a quieter morning activity. Return and have lunch. In the afternoon, visit Mahamandira temple if you like intricate murals and peaceful spaces, or spend time in the bazaars picking up textiles, mojari shoes and local handicrafts. End with an evening walk at the Clock Tower area, dinner in the old city, and perhaps a rooftop stop to see Mehrangarh lit against the night sky.

Make the plan work for everyone

• Visit Mehrangarh Fort at opening time, take a jeep up to Jaleb Chowk, and hire a guide to avoid unnecessary stairs inside.
• The old city bazaars are level but crowded and can be disorienting. Go in late morning before the afternoon heat, and allow extra time to rest in courtyards or cafés.
• Umaid Bhawan Palace, Kaylana Lake and Balsamand Lake are comfortable, level outings. Avoid midday hours when heat is extreme.
• Choose a hotel on High Court Road or C-Scheme rather than inside the old city for easier car access, better medical facilities and quieter nights.
• Hire a car and driver for the entire stay. It provides air-conditioned rest between sights and avoids long walks in heat.
• Ratanada Ganesh Temple and Mahamandira are active temples with stairs and uneven floors. Wear socks and be prepared for crowds on festivals.
