The short answer
Best areas to stay in Jodhpur
- 01
Old city edge (near Soorji Gate and Clock Tower)
Best for: Travellers who want to be inside the action, walking distance to Johari Bazaar and Hawa Mahal-equivalent views
Atmospheric, with heritage hotels and havelis. The trade-offs are noise, narrow lanes where cars cannot always reach the door, and steep interior stairs in older properties. Check vehicle access and lift availability carefully if travelling with elders.
- 02
High Court Road and C-Scheme
Best for: Families and seniors who want calm, modern amenities and good restaurants
A planned, leafy area with good hospitals, restaurants and cafés. About 10–20 minutes by car to the fort, traffic dependent. More comfortable and quieter than the old city.
- 03
Umaid Bhawan Avenue
Best for: Heritage and resort-style stays with views of the palace
Several hotels and heritage properties sit on or near the avenue leading to Umaid Bhawan. Closer to the palace and Balsamand Lake. Fewer restaurants within walking distance.
- 04
Near the railway station (Naya Bazar area)
Best for: Convenience for arrivals and departures, and authentic neighbourhood feel
Practical if you travel by train. Less touristy, with family-run guesthouses and small eateries. A short drive to major sights.
- 05
Rai Ka Bagh
Best for: Travellers who want a resort-style property with gardens and pools
A heritage palace property on the outskirts. Quieter and more secluded, but you will need a car to reach the old city and bazaars.

Before you book
What to check when booking for older travellers
- Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
- Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
- Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
- Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
- Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.

Comfort notes for Jodhpur
- Visit Mehrangarh Fort at opening time, take a jeep up to Jaleb Chowk, and hire a guide to avoid unnecessary stairs inside.
- The old city bazaars are level but crowded and can be disorienting. Go in late morning before the afternoon heat, and allow extra time to rest in courtyards or cafés.
- Umaid Bhawan Palace, Kaylana Lake and Balsamand Lake are comfortable, level outings. Avoid midday hours when heat is extreme.
- Choose a hotel on High Court Road or C-Scheme rather than inside the old city for easier car access, better medical facilities and quieter nights.
