The short answer
Best areas to stay in Khajuraho
- 01
Near the temples (Western Group area)
Best for: Visitors who want to walk to the temples and be in the heart of the action
Hotels here are within a 5–10 minute walk of the Kandariya Mahadeva and other major temples, allowing early-morning and sunset visits without a car. This area is quieter than large cities, so expect fewer restaurants and amenities but maximum convenience for sightseeing.
- 02
Town centre (bazaar and main street)
Best for: Travellers who want restaurants, shops and town life on their doorstep
About 10–15 minutes by foot from the temples. This is where Khajuraho's small bazaar, food stalls and local shops are located. Hotels here tend to be smaller and offer a taste of how locals live. The trade-off is some noise from the bazaar.
- 03
Resort and hotel zone (south of town)
Best for: Families and seniors seeking a resort-style stay with pools and gardens
Several heritage and resort-style hotels are located slightly outside the town, surrounded by quiet grounds and gardens. A short drive from the temples, they offer calm, space and amenities like pools and spas. Good for those who want to retreat between sightseeing.

Before you book
What to check when booking for older travellers
- Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
- Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
- Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
- Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
- Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.

Comfort notes for Khajuraho
- Start your temple visits early, before 9 AM, when it is cool and less crowded. The light is also better for photography.
- The temples involve walking on uneven stone ground and some climbing of steps. Wear comfortable shoes with good grip, and bring trekking poles if you have mobility concerns.
- There is shade under large trees and pavilions near the temples, and the Khajuraho Museum is cool and mostly level. Plan your day to alternate between outdoor temples and an indoor rest.
- The town is compact and distances are manageable. A good hotel with easy car access to the temples is key. Avoid places where you have to carry luggage up steep stairs.
