Plan 01
1 day in Khajuraho
- 01
Day 1: The western temples
Arrive early and make straight for the Western Group of temples, the most important cluster. Start with the Kandariya Mahadeva temple, allowing an hour to walk around it and study the sculpture, then move to the Lakshmana temple next door. Take time to sit on the steps and observe the carved panels: the detail is extraordinary. Visit the Chitragupta temple across the lawn, then the Devi Jagdambi temple. Have lunch at a local restaurant, then spend the late afternoon at the Khajuraho Museum to understand the history and see smaller sculptures and artefacts. Watch the sunset from near the temples as the light turns golden.

2 days in Khajuraho
- 01
Day 1: Western Group temples and sculpture study
Begin at dawn with the Kandariya Mahadeva temple when it is cool and quiet, then work through the Lakshmana, Chitragupta and Devi Jagdambi temples. Bring a guide if you want to understand the iconography and mythological narratives carved into the walls, or walk slowly on your own with a basic reference. Around midday, retreat for lunch and a rest. In the late afternoon, visit the Khajuraho Museum to see smaller pieces and understand the Chandela period. End the evening watching the temples shift colour as the sun sets.

Day 2: Eastern temples and countryside
The morning is for the smaller Eastern Group temples: the Adinatha temple (Jain), Parshvanatha temple (Jain) and the Vamadeva temple (Hindu). These are quieter, surrounded by fields, and give a sense of the landscape the temples were built in. Have lunch in town, then either visit Raneh Falls and the Ken River gorge, about an hour away by car, or explore the Panna National Park for wildlife and forest. Both offer a contrast to the carved stone. Return to town as light fades, and visit the Southern Group temples (Duladeo, Chaturbhuj) if energy allows.

3 days in Khajuraho
- 01
Day 1: Western temples and sculpture
Spend the full day on the Western Group: Kandariya Mahadeva, Lakshmana, Chitragupta, Devi Jagdambi, Matangeshwar and Visvanatha temples. Begin early, move slowly from temple to temple, and allow time to sit and study the carved panels. Hire a guide for at least the Kandariya Mahadeva to understand the iconography of the walls. Late afternoon: visit the Khajuraho Museum and the on-site Jain temple section. Watch the sunset.
- 02
Day 2: Eastern temples and Raneh Falls
Morning at the quieter Eastern Group temples: Adinatha, Parshvanatha, Vamadeva and the Brahma temple (a small, graceful structure). Lunch in town, then drive to Raneh Falls, about 45 minutes away. The Ken River has carved a spectacular gorge through ochre-coloured sandstone, and the tiered waterfall is striking, especially in the monsoon and winter. You can walk along the gorge and see local fish eagles. Return to Khajuraho by evening.
- 03
Day 3: Panna National Park or remaining temples
Option A: Spend the morning at Panna National Park, about 40–45 minutes away. It is home to tigers, leopards, deer and birds; book a jeep safari in advance with the park office or through your hotel. Return to Khajuraho by early afternoon. Option B: Explore the remaining Southern Group temples (Duladeo, Chaturbhuj, Javari) and smaller sites, then visit a local craft workshop to see artisans working in stone and brass. Finish with a walk through the town's local markets and a final evening at the temples.

Pacing
Make the plan work for everyone
- Start your temple visits early, before 9 AM, when it is cool and less crowded. The light is also better for photography.
- The temples involve walking on uneven stone ground and some climbing of steps. Wear comfortable shoes with good grip, and bring trekking poles if you have mobility concerns.
- There is shade under large trees and pavilions near the temples, and the Khajuraho Museum is cool and mostly level. Plan your day to alternate between outdoor temples and an indoor rest.
- The town is compact and distances are manageable. A good hotel with easy car access to the temples is key. Avoid places where you have to carry luggage up steep stairs.
- If you hire a guide, choose someone who can walk slowly and stop often. Many guides rush through too quickly for older travellers.
- Bring plenty of water, a hat and sunscreen, and take a rest at midday. The plains can be very hot from April to June.
