The original chapel on this site was built by the Portuguese in the early 16th century. Over centuries, it was destroyed, rebuilt and destroyed again. The current Gothic Revival building dates to 1887 and represents both the persistence of Christian faith in Kerala and the aesthetic of a later colonial era, when the Gothic style was understood as a universal language of religious architecture.
The basilica is not old by European standards, but it is the newest and grandest of Kochi's churches, and its prominence speaks to the communities that built and sustained it. It is also one of the most recognizable structures in the city, visible from many parts of Kochi.
