Every Naga tribe cooks a little differently, and this market is where those ingredients come together: smoked and fermented foods, wild greens gathered from village forests, and seasonal protein that rarely reaches markets elsewhere in India. For visitors it explains the dishes you will eat in Kohima far better than a restaurant menu does. It also shows how village households, and the women who run most of the stalls, earn a cash income from what they grow and gather, which is a large part of how the town is fed.

Walk through slowly and look at what is on the tables: seasonal greens, local chillies and garlic, fermented soya bean, bamboo shoot and, depending on the season, river snails, frogs and edible insects that are part of Naga cooking. Most sellers are women who have come in from surrounding villages, and many are happy to tell you what something is and how it is cooked.
A large fire on 27 February 2023 gutted over 200 shops in Mao Market and the neighbouring NN Market. Trading has continued in the area, but the layout may differ from older descriptions, so ask your driver or hotel where the vegetable sellers are now.
