- There is no railway to Leh. The nearest railhead is Jammu (about 20 hours by road). Most travellers fly into Leh or drive from Manali (about 2 days).

- A private car and driver is essential for day trips and monasteries. Shared jeeps (Sumo or similar) run fixed routes to Pangong and Nubra. The town itself is small and can be walked, but altitude makes walking slow.

Easy transfers to and in Leh
- Hire a private car and driver for the entire stay. Day trips to monasteries and lakes are taxing without transport, and fatigue at altitude is dangerous. A good driver also knows the road conditions and can stop whenever needed.
- Ask the airline or railway for wheelchair or porter assistance when you book, not on the day.
- Pre-book the pickup from the airport or station, so nobody has to negotiate with drivers after a long journey.
- Choose arrivals in daylight where you can, and keep the first afternoon free to rest.
