The region's importance faded after Indian independence when trade patterns shifted and banking moved to cities. Many mansions are now abandoned or subdivided. For visitors, Chettinad is a living archive of merchant-class life and cosmopolitan luxury in early modern Tamil Nadu.

How to experience it
Leave early and drive north-west to Karaikudi, roughly 90 minutes away. Visit Thangavelu Mansion, Sathyam Mansion or similar key sites. These sprawling courtyards are surrounded by columns, arches and decorated tiles with a central open well (ottu). Notice the carved doors, plasterwork, and use of deep reds, blacks and cream in tilework.
Visit one or two tile workshops or small museums. Athangudi, nearby, is known for hand-made ceramic and clay tiles. The sense is of a region frozen in time: grand mansions alongside modern decline, families still living in corners of vast houses, and slow ruin of some structures.
Stop for lunch in Karaikudi town. Food is local Tamil cuisine, simpler than restaurant fare. Return by evening, or stay overnight if you want slower pace and photography time.
