The Vaigai River has been central to Madurai's life and legend for millennia. Hindu tradition associates the river with the goddess Vaigai, a consort of the god Indra. The Meenakshi Temple's southern boundary is the river, making it symbolically and physically important to the city's sacred geography.

How to experience it
Several access points exist to the Vaigai. Near Meenakshi Temple, steps (ghats) lead down to the water. This is a lively spot, especially early morning when pilgrims bathe. Walk along the top of the bank for views over the temple gopurams and the flowing water. In the dry season (January to May), the river runs thin; in the monsoon (October to December), it swells and is more impressive.
Alternatively, drive to Azhagar Koil, a temple south of the city on the river's edge, and walk the banks there. It is quieter than the central temple area. Bring a water bottle and sit on a rock to watch the water, the bathers, the fishermen and the riverside life.
Early morning visits yield the best photographs and a sense of the river as a spiritual place for locals.
