NH44, NH85 and NH38 pass through Madurai, linking it to Chennai, Tiruchirapalli and Kanyakumari; three major bus terminals serve inter-city routes.

For parents and senior travellers
Easy transfers to and in Madurai
- Hire a private car and driver for the full stay rather than hailing autos. This provides a cool rest space, avoids long walks between sights, and is economical for 2–3 people.
- Dress modestly for temples: shoulders and knees covered. Carry socks or slip-on footwear for temple floors (which can be very hot). Remove footwear before entering inner sanctums; lockers are available.
- Drink plenty of water, use sunscreen and a hat. The sun reflecting off stone bazaar streets is intense. Carry oral rehydration salts (ORS) packets if you have concerns about water safety.
- Several large hospitals are north of the Vaigai and near the Government Rajaji Hospital area. Note the nearest pharmacy and hospital to your hotel. Madurai Medical College is a major facility if you need serious care.
- Ask the airline or railway for wheelchair or porter assistance when you book, not on the day.
- Pre-book the pickup from the airport or station, so nobody has to negotiate with drivers after a long journey.
- Choose arrivals in daylight where you can, and keep the first afternoon free to rest.
