Before you go
Mangaluru with elderly parents: what to know
- Choose a hotel in Bejai or Lighthouse Hill rather than the port-side industrial areas. Both have heritage hotels with character and are quieter than central Mangaluru.
- Temple visits are early morning (6–8 a.m. opening) to avoid crowds and heat. Kadri Manjunath and Mangaladevi temples have steep internal stairs—wear comfortable shoes and ascend slowly.
- Beaches are best in October–January; April–June the heat and wind make them uncomfortable for extended time. A beach walk of 30–45 minutes is usually enough.
- Hire a car and driver for the day; auto-rickshaw queues and crowded buses are tiring. A driver also makes side trips (Pilikula, the northern beaches) manageable without fatigue.
- Rest in the afternoon (2–4 p.m.). A good hotel with air-conditioning and a quiet room is essential, especially April–June.
- Seafood is the city's strength but can be heavy. If digestion is sensitive, eat lighter fish dishes and avoid curries with thick coconut cream. Local restaurants are hygienic but can be oily in cooking.
- Nearest hospital and pharmacy: note the location relative to your hotel. C.I.S. Hospital and several clinics serve the Bejai and central areas.
