Before you go

Neil Island (Shaheed Dweep) with elderly parents: what to know

  • The island is exceptionally flat and small—the longest scooter ride is under 30 minutes. This makes it ideal for older travellers who may find longer travel tiring.
  • Rent a scooter, auto-rickshaw or hire a driver for the day rather than walking between villages. Distances are short and the village roads are navigable.
  • Visit Arch Rock and do reef walking at low tide. It is wading (knee-deep at most), not diving, and there are no currents or dangerous tide pools.
  • Bharatpur Beach has the calmest and shallowest water, ideal if you want to swim without strong currents or deep water. Other beaches are safe but may have gentle waves.
  • The island has no major medical facilities; the nearest hospital is in Port Blair. If you have serious health concerns, consult a doctor before visiting or stay in Port Blair instead.
  • The midday sun is intense. Wear a hat, sunscreen and light clothing. Beach time in the early morning or late afternoon is more comfortable than midday.
  • There are no lifeguards on the beaches. Swim with companions and do not venture into deep water alone.

Easiest first

Places in Neil Island (Shaheed Dweep) sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (3)

  • Ram Nagar Village (Places to visit · 1 to 1.5 hours) — The beach is accessible by a short walk from the main road. Paths in the village are uneven but level. There is shade from coconut palms and the beach has some rocky outcrops to sit on. Good for leisurely visits with older travellers.
  • Sitapur Village (Places to visit · 45 minutes to 1 hour) — The village paths are generally level and compact. There are no long walks, and you can rest in the shade of coconut palms. A slow pace suits it well. The paths are uneven in places, so stable footwear helps.
  • Swaraj Dweep (Havelock Island) (Places to visit · Full day (ferry 2 hours each way, 5–6 hours on the island); overnight stay recommended) — The main beaches are easily accessible from the landing point. There are restaurants, cafés and basic shops on Havelock, plus several hotels and resorts. Walking on the beaches is easy; the terrain is mostly level. The ferry can be rough in seas, so consult a doctor if you have vertigo or motion sickness concerns.

Some walking — plan a break (4)

  • Island Scooter Route (Village Loop) (Culture and craft · 3 to 4 hours with stops; full day if you spend time at beaches and villages) — If you are comfortable on a scooter, the ride is generally easy, with no steep hills. Rough road sections are short. If you are not a rider, hire a driver or join a guided tour.
  • Mangrove Boat Tour (Culture and craft · 1 to 2 hours, including boat ride and guide talk) — Boat transfers and seating are generally easy. The boat moves slowly and stays in calm, protected water. Life jackets are usually provided. Avoid if you have severe mobility issues or are uncomfortable being helped in and out of boats.
  • Port Blair with Cellular Jail (Places to visit · 3 to 4 hours for the jail alone; 6–8 hours to include the city and a meal) — The Cellular Jail is a steep walk up from the entrance, with stairs between levels. The cells are small and can feel claustrophobic. There are benches on the upper galleries to rest. Climatic conditions inside are hot and humid. For those who cannot manage the stairs, the ground floor gives the basic sense of the building.
  • Ross Island (Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Dweep) (Places to visit · 3 to 4 hours, including ferry transfer and a self-guided walk of the island) — The ferry is a short 20–30 minute ride on a small passenger boat; it can be choppy if the sea is rough. On the island, the main walking paths are mostly level but uneven, shaded by forest canopy. There are benches near key ruins. The walking is unhurried; you can rest whenever you want.
