Many pilgrims light candles and sit quietly for prayer.

The side chapels are less visited, so walk around the perimeter. The stone floors are uneven in places, worn by centuries of feet. After the church, cross the courtyard to the smaller Church of St. Francis of Assisi next door if you have energy.
If you are there during Mass, the ritual and singing add a different dimension. Otherwise, the quiet hours after early Mass and before mid-morning are best.
