The Se Cathedral was commissioned in 1562 and completed in 1652. It was built to be the largest Catholic cathedral in Asia, a monument to Portuguese power and the spread of Christianity in the East. Its name comes from the Portuguese word 'sé,' meaning cathedral seat.
The simplicity of the interior—so different from European cathedrals—was partly practical (the large windows and open space kept it cool) and partly theological (the Portuguese wanted the focus on the altar and the divine, not on decoration). It remained the headquarters of the Catholic church in Goa until the 20th century. For India, it represents a turning point: the arrival of European architecture and religion, and the complex history of colonial coexistence.

The cathedral opens to you as soon as you enter: a vast rectangular hall with a high wooden ceiling, arched ribs, and a stone floor worn by centuries of use. There is very little decoration inside—no painted walls, no ornate shrines—which is unusual for a Catholic cathedral. This stark beauty is the point. The silence and space are powerful.
Walk the length of the nave to the altar at the far end. Turn and look back at the entrance, the doors framed by stone arches. Then explore the side chapels. Some have paintings, some have altars. Notice the stone baptismal font near the entrance, which has been used since the 16th century. If you are there during a service, you will hear how the emptiness carries the liturgy.
After the cathedral, walk around the exterior to see the facade's carved stone details and understand the building's fortress-like proportions. Then visit the smaller churches nearby—St. Francis of Assisi, the Nunnery, and the Convent of St. Monica—which cluster in the same area.

Is Se Cathedral the same as Basilica of Bom Jesus?
