Before you go

Port Blair (Sri Vijaya Puram) with elderly parents: what to know

  • The Cellular Jail has flat interior corridors and is mostly level. The audio-light show is outdoors on a sloped amphitheatre; allow time to sit and rest between sections if needed.
  • Avoid visiting Port Blair in June to September (monsoon season), when heat and humidity are extreme and ferries are less reliable. October to March is the comfortable window.
  • The town is built on a hillside; choose a hotel near the jetty or bazaar to minimize steep climbs. Ask your hotel about access and parking before booking.
  • Use app-based cabs or negotiate fixed fares with auto drivers beforehand. The town is small; a single auto or taxi for the day to visit the Cellular Jail, bazaar and jetty is practical.
  • The Cellular Jail audio guide is available in English; it provides historical context and paces the visit comfortably. Do not rush; give yourself two to three hours for the full experience.
  • Bring sunscreen, a hat and light clothing; the coastal heat reflects off water and buildings. Carry bottled water and rest frequently in shaded areas.
  • Hospitals and pharmacies are scattered but available. Major centres are near Civil Lines and the jetty area. Confirm the nearest one to your hotel on arrival.

Easiest first

Places in Port Blair (Sri Vijaya Puram) sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (12)

  • Aberdeen Bazaar (Shopping · 1 to 2 hours) — Mostly level pavements and roads, though crowded and busy in the evening with some uneven footpaths. Shops and eateries offer plenty of places to sit and rest between stops.
  • Amaya (Food and restaurants · 1.5 to 2 hours for dinner) — Rooftop seating with lift access is generally available given its location within a hotel; confirm accessibility when booking if stairs are a concern.
  • Anthropological Museum (Culture and craft · 30 to 45 minutes) — A compact, single-storey layout with level floors and minimal walking required. The museum is quieter and less crowded than the main tourist sites, which makes for an unhurried visit.
  • Chidiya Tapu Sunset Point (Places to visit · Half a day including the drive, or 1–2 hours for the sunset point alone) — The sunset viewing area is reached by a short, mostly level walk from the parking area, with some uneven ground near the shoreline. The Biological Park has level paved paths between enclosures. The drive itself is the main time commitment rather than physical exertion.
  • Corbyn's Cove Beach (Places to visit · 1 to 2 hours) — Level sand access from the road with a paved approach in parts, changing rooms and basic facilities nearby. There is shade from coconut palms in places, and simple seating at the food shacks along the beach.
  • Gurudwara Dr Diwan Singh (Police Gurudwara) (Places of worship · 10 to 20 minutes; longer if you join the langar) — A level, single-precinct gurdwara with straightforward access, though visitors should be ready to sit on the floor during prayers or langar, which may need extra care for those with limited mobility.
  • Icy Spicy (Food and restaurants · 45 minutes to 1 hour) — Two-floor seating with standard restaurant access; ask for ground-floor seating if stairs are a concern, since the ground floor covers chaats and sweets while the upper floor serves full meals.
  • New Lighthouse Restaurant (Food and restaurants · 45 minutes to 1 hour for a meal) — Ground-floor and first-floor balcony seating is available, with straightforward access; ask for ground-floor seating if stairs are a concern.
  • North Bay Island (Places to visit · 3 to 4 hours including the boat crossing and time on the island) — Most of the visit happens on the beach and in shallow water rather than involving much walking, but boarding the boat requires a steady step and there can be some rocking on the crossing. Snorkelling itself is optional; a glass-bottom boat ride is a gentler way to see the coral without getting in the water.
  • Sagarika Government Emporium (Shopping · 20 to 30 minutes) — A single-level indoor shop with air conditioning and no significant walking required, making it a comfortable, low-effort stop.
  • Samudrika Naval Marine Museum (Places to visit · 45 minutes to 1 hour) — The museum is a single, compact, air-conditioned building with level floors throughout, making it one of the more comfortable indoor stops in Port Blair. There is no significant walking involved beyond moving between the five small sections.
  • Sri Veer Hanuman Temple (Places of worship · 10 to 15 minutes) — A small, level temple precinct with minimal walking, though visitors should be ready to remove footwear before entering, which can be a consideration for those with mobility concerns.

Some walking — plan a break (3)

  • Cellular Jail (Places to visit · 2 to 3 hours for the museum; add 45 minutes for the evening show) — The wings and central watchtower area are on one level with flat corridors, so there are no internal stairs to worry about in the main cell blocks. The site is large, though, and covers open ground between wings, so plan for a fair amount of walking in the heat; benches are limited. The evening show is outdoors on tiered seating that some find harder to manage after dark.
  • Chatham Saw Mill (Places to visit · 1 to 1.5 hours) — The site involves walking across a working mill yard with machinery, sawdust and uneven ground in places, plus a forest museum with level indoor floors. It is manageable at a slow pace but is not a manicured garden path; sturdy, closed shoes help.
  • Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Dweep (Ross Island) (Places to visit · 1.5 to 2 hours on the island, plus ferry time) — Paths between the ruined buildings are mostly flat, packed earth or old paving, with some uneven ground near tree roots; there is little seating and limited shade in parts. The ferry ride itself is short but involves boarding from a jetty, which needs a steady step. Spotted deer wander freely and are generally calm around visitors.
