Before you go
Rameswaram with elderly parents: what to know
- The Ramanathaswamy Temple corridors are level and covered, which is excellent for mobility. Wear comfortable shoes at home but plan to leave them at the temple entrance; temple floors can be very hot underfoot in the afternoon.
- The full tirthas ritual (twenty-two bathing sites) is long and demanding. Ask temple staff to guide you through the essential ones and consider missing a few if fatigue sets in. Many pilgrims and staff are accustomed to helping older visitors.
- Dhanushkodi is very exposed to sun and wind. Take it as a short trip in the morning with plenty of water and a hat. The road is long and bumpy; a comfortable car with good suspension is preferable to a shared jeep.
- The island is small and the town is walkable, but distances can feel longer in the heat. Hire a car and driver for the full duration if possible, or book autos in advance rather than hailing them on the street.
- Rest for 1–2 hours after lunch, especially during hot months. The afternoon heat is intense, and a midday break is not a luxury—it is essential for comfort and safety.
- Stay hydrated and carry water, electrolyte salts and light snacks at all times. Heat-related illness is a real risk. Wear a hat, sunscreen and loose, light-coloured cotton clothing.
- The nearest hospital is in Ramanathapuram (30 km away by road). Rameswaram has a Primary Health Centre but limited specialist care. If you are on regular medications or have a chronic condition, carry sufficient supplies and a copy of your medical summary.
Easiest first
Places in Rameswaram sorted by walking effort
Easy on the legs (18)
- Agni Tirtham (Places to visit · 30–60 minutes) — The ghat has a gentler slope than many, with steps carved into the stone. The water is shallow enough for most swimmers to stand, though currents exist. Rest areas on the shore are few, so bring a bench or stool if sitting matters. The walk from the temple is roughly 5 minutes.
- Hanuman Tirtham (Places to visit · Included in the main temple visit (15–20 minutes)) — Good: within covered temple, part of the standard ritual
- Jatayu Tirtham (Places to visit · Included in the main temple visit (15–20 minutes)) — Good: within the covered temple corridors, part of the standard tirthas ritual
- Kothandaramaswamy Temple (Places of worship · 30–45 minutes) — The temple is small and compact, with no steep steps or long corridors. A car can park nearby, and the walk to the shrine is short and flat. This is one of the easier temples in Rameswaram for elderly visitors.
- Lakshmana Tirtham (Places to visit · Included in the main temple visit (15–20 minutes)) — Good: within covered temple, part of the standard ritual
- Pamban Bridge (Places to visit · 30–60 minutes for views and photos) — The road bridge is flat and motorable. You can drive across or park near it and walk. Walking the full length is 2 km and is mostly level but exposed to sun; many older travellers prefer to stop at a midpoint or view from a vehicle.
- Pamban Lighthouse (Places to visit · 20–30 minutes) — The walk to the lighthouse is short and level. The landing platform is accessible, though there are a few low steps. No climbing is required.
- Pamban Railway Station (Culture and craft · 30–45 minutes) — The station building and platforms are level and accessible. Walking the length of the platform offers good views. The station is well-maintained and comfortable for older visitors.
- Ramanathaswamy Temple (Places of worship · 1–2 hours) — The corridors are level, cool and spacious, with many benches for rest. The outer courtyards are paved and manageable. Some older visitors find the bathing ritual tanks intimidating (steep steps and currents), but you can simply observe or skip them without compromising the visit.
- Ramarpatham Temple (Places of worship · 30–45 minutes) — The temple is small and compact, with minimal steps. A car can drop you near the entrance. The walk is short and flat, making it accessible for older travellers.
- Rameswaram Coral Beach (Culture and craft · 1–2 hours) — Good: sandy beach with gentle slope, no hazardous terrain
- Rameswaram Fishing Harbour (Shopping · 45 minutes to 1.5 hours) — Fair: the jetty is open and accessible, but can be crowded and noisy

Some walking — plan a break (2)
- Dhanushkodi (Places to visit · Half day, including the drive (90 minutes return road journey)) — The drive is rough and potholed in many sections, taxing for those with mobility or back issues. The road winds through mangrove forests and salt marshes. Once at Dhanushkodi, the beach is sandy but accessible by vehicle almost to the water's edge. Short walking is fine; longer trekking over rubble is not advised for those with joint problems.
- Gandhamathana Parvatham (Places to visit · 1 hour, including the drive and climb) — The walk to the base is short and flat. The climb to the shrine involves 50–70 steps carved into the rock. They are uneven and have no handrails, so older travellers should take their time. The view from the top is worth the effort for most fit seniors.
