Plan 01
1 day in Shimla
- 01
Day 1: Ridge walk and toy train
Arrive early or the previous evening. Start with breakfast at a café overlooking the town, then walk the Ridge from Christ Church past the Viceroy Lodge to Scandal Point. The walk is level and takes two hours at a leisurely pace. Visit Christ Church for its stained glass and quiet interior, then grab lunch at a Ridge-side restaurant. In the afternoon, either take a short toy train ride towards Tara Devi or, if you prefer, visit the Shimla State Museum to see colonial photographs and Pahari art. End the day with a sunset walk through the lower bazaar and dinner at an old-town restaurant.

2 days in Shimla
- 01
Day 1: Ridge, Church and Viceroy Lodge
Arrive early or stay the previous night. Begin at Christ Church with a quiet morning inside its cool, echoing interior. Walk the entire Ridge to the Viceroy Lodge, taking the path past Scandal Point. Lunch at a café on the Ridge. In the afternoon, either explore the Viceroy Lodge gardens and the rooms open to visitors, or visit the Indian Institute of Advanced Study (a former palace, with guided tours). Spend the evening browsing Mall Road and the bazaar, then settle in for dinner at a restaurant with a view of the sunset or town lights.
- 02
Day 2: Forest walk and toy train
Take a light breakfast, then hire a car for a drive to nearby Tara Devi temple (roughly 30 minutes by road) or Jakhoo Temple for a short forest walk and views of the town below. Return for a long lunch. In the afternoon, either take the toy train for a scenic hour-long round trip from Shimla station (towards Tara Devi or another stop, depending on the day's train schedule), or visit the Shimla State Museum and Gaiety Theatre. Afternoon tea at a heritage café, then depart or prepare for an evening walk through the quieter edges of town.

Plan 03
3 days in Shimla
- 01
Day 1: Ridge and the old town
Settle in with breakfast at a café on the Ridge. Spend the morning walking from Christ Church to the Viceroy Lodge, stepping inside both if time allows. Stop for a light lunch at a Ridge-side spot. In the afternoon, explore the cobbled lanes of the bazaar below the Ridge, visiting small shops and the Shimla State Museum. End with an evening walk back to the Ridge for sunset over the peaks, then dinner in town.
- 02
Day 2: Toy train journey and forest
Take an early breakfast and depart for Kalka station to begin the toy train journey back up to Shimla, or ride from Shimla towards Tara Devi and back (the full journey between Kalka and Shimla takes roughly 5 hours). Alternatively, hire a car and visit the Kufri orchard area (roughly 15 km, 30–40 minutes by road) for a gentle picnic and views of Kinnaur. Return in the afternoon for rest and light dinner.
- 03
Day 3: Temples, gardens and reflection
Visit Jakhoo Temple (reachable by a gentle uphill walk or vehicle) early in the morning for views and the arrival of pilgrims, or drive to the tranquil gardens of the Viceroy Lodge for a second, longer visit. Spend the late morning and early afternoon in a café or back at your hotel. In the afternoon, take a final walk through the quieter edges of the Ridge or a nearby forest path. End with a leisurely dinner and packing for departure.

Pacing
Make the plan work for everyone
- Give yourself a day to adjust to the altitude: Shimla sits at 2,158 metres. Most visitors feel nothing more than mild tiredness or a slightly faster pulse on arrival, but it is sensible to keep day one light, drink more water than usual, and avoid a steep climb such as Jakhoo Temple until day two.
- Cold evenings catch people out, even in warmer months: Daytime temperatures can feel pleasantly mild in April or October, but evenings drop sharply once the sun goes behind the ridgeline. Pack a proper sweater or jacket regardless of season, not just a light shawl.
- The Ridge and Mall Road are level; almost everything else has steps or slopes: Central Shimla is built on a steep hillside, and lanes running off the Ridge and Mall Road, including Lakkar Bazaar and the route to Lower Bazaar, involve stairs and uneven cobbles. Plan sightseeing loops that start and end on the level Ridge if walking stamina is limited.
- Book a car and driver for anything outside the town centre: Viceregal Lodge, the Himachal State Museum, Kufri, Tara Devi and Wildflower Hall are all a drive rather than a walk from the Ridge. A car and driver for a half or full day is more comfortable than stringing together individual taxis or app cabs, which can be scarce at peak times.
- Confirm the toy train schedule and route before booking: Sections of the Kalka-Shimla line have at times been closed for repair work, and full-route journeys sell out in peak season. Check the current timetable directly and decide between a short local ride and the full Kalka-Shimla run before you commit.
- Keep food and bags secured around Jakhoo Temple: The langurs living around the temple are confident with visitors and will take unattended food, plastic bags or anything that looks like a snack. Keep such items zipped away rather than carried loosely.
