The short answer
Best areas to stay in Shimla
- 01
Ridge and Mall Road (the heart of town)
Best for: Travellers who want to walk to sights, cafés and restaurants
The Ridge itself has heritage hotels and newer properties with views. Mall Road nearby has the town's busiest restaurants and shops. Convenient for everything, but can be noisy and crowded in high season. Great for atmosphere; less ideal for a quiet night's rest if noise bothers you.
- 02
Lower bazaar (Lakkar Bazaar)
Best for: Budget travellers and those wanting old-town character
Narrow cobbled lanes with smaller guesthouses and shops. Atmospheric and walking-distance to the Ridge. Stairs and uneven ground mean it is less suitable for seniors or those with mobility concerns.
- 03
Kanlog and Summer Hill (outer edges, 2–3 km north)
Best for: Those seeking quiet gardens, forests and space
A cluster of colonial villas and heritage hotels set among gardens and deodar forests. Roughly 10–15 minutes by car to the Ridge. Very peaceful; you will need a car or cab for sightseeing, but the mornings and evenings here are magical.
- 04
Chotta Shimla (south of the Ridge)
Best for: A middle ground between bustle and quiet
Several good hotels and restaurants, within a 10-minute walk of the Ridge. Less crowded than the Ridge itself, with reasonable access to shops and sights.

Before you book
What to check when booking for older travellers
- Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
- Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
- Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
- Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
- Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.

Comfort notes for Shimla
- The Ridge is largely level and is the best place to start your Shimla experience. Walk it in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday crowds and heat.
- The altitude is 2,158 metres; give yourself a day to acclimatise if arriving by air or from lower elevations. Keep water handy and do not overexert on day one.
- Opt for vehicle access to Jakhoo Temple and Tara Devi if climbing stairs is a concern. The views from the car are nearly as rewarding as those from the summit.
- The toy train journey is scenic but slow—roughly 5 hours for the full Kalka–Shimla route. Book a comfortable coach and break the journey at a halt if needed. Check the status of any track maintenance before booking.
