Before you go

Shravasti with elderly parents: what to know

  • The excavation site is largely level, but uneven in places. Wear sturdy walking shoes and a wide-brimmed hat. Sunscreen and water are essential, especially from March to June.
  • Plan your visits during the cooler months (November to January). Summers in this region are intensely hot, and afternoons are exhausting even at the best of times.
  • Hire a car and driver for the full two days. Walking between sites in the town is tiring, and the excavation site is some distance away.
  • Most guesthouses have basic facilities. Hospitals are concentrated in larger towns like Gonda; note the nearest hospital before you travel.
  • The temples and monastery have few benches or sheltered rest areas. Bring a folding stool or mat if you wish to sit and meditate.
  • Buddhist sites are quiet and contemplative, which suits a slow pace. Plan one major activity (the monastery ruins) for each day and allow time for rest and reflection.

Easiest first

Places in Shravasti sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (3)

  • Angulimala Stupa & Anathapindika's Stupa (Places to visit · 20–30 minutes) — Level ground, close to the main Jetavana path, with no steps; the walk between the two stupas is short but has no shade or seating.
  • Lumbini Day Trip (Places to visit · Full day round trip from Shravasti; longer with an overnight in Lumbini) — The Sacred Garden and Mayadevi Temple grounds are level and walkable, but the border crossing involves queuing and some walking between checkpoints; allow extra time and avoid the hottest hours.
  • Shobhnath Jain Temple (Places of worship · 15–20 minutes) — Flat, level ground reached on the same paths as the main ruins; no steps, but no shade or seating either.

Some walking — plan a break (2)

  • Jetavana Monastery (Places to visit · 2–3 hours) — Paths are flat, unpaved brick and gravel with no steps, but there is little shade and few benches; bring a hat, water and rest in the shade of the Anandabodhi tree.
  • Maheth Ancient City Walls (Places to visit · 30–40 minutes) — The ramparts are earthen mounds rather than paved paths, uneven underfoot in places, with no seating or shade; a short walk along one section is more comfortable than circling the whole perimeter.

Practical tips for Shravasti

  • Heat is the main constraint. March to June is intensely hot for outdoor walking, and even the cooler months warm up by mid-morning. Plan the archaeological park for early morning or late afternoon and rest indoors in between.
  • A car and driver is close to essential. The Sahet-Mahet site is around 15 km outside Shravasti town and not well served by public transport. Arrange a car for the day rather than relying on local autos for the whole itinerary.
  • Walking surfaces are uneven brick and gravel. None of the ruins involve steps, but paths are unpaved and slightly uneven underfoot. Flat, closed shoes with grip are more useful here than sandals.
  • Shade and seating are scarce. Beyond the Anandabodhi tree, the archaeological park has little shelter. Carry a hat, sunscreen and water, and build in rest breaks rather than trying to cover everything in one push.
  • English signage is limited on site. Most structures are numbered but not explained in detail. A local guide, arranged through your hotel or at the site, adds a great deal, particularly for the Angulimala, Anathapindika and Jain stories.
  • Dress modestly at temples and the monastery. Cover shoulders and knees when visiting the Jain temple ruins or any of the working monasteries and shrines in the area, as a mark of respect.
  • Carry your passport if adding Lumbini. Crossing into Nepal at Sonauli requires identification; a passport is the most reliable document. Confirm current entry requirements for Indian nationals before you travel, as border rules can change.
  • Food and medical options are limited locally. Shravasti town has only a few simple places to eat and no major hospital; Gonda and Gorakhpur are the nearest towns with fuller services. Plan medication and meals accordingly, especially for a multi-day stay.
