Plan 01

1 day in Sonamarg

  1. 01

Day 1: Thajiwas Glacier and meadow walks

Arrive in the late morning to allow time to settle and acclimatise. Take a pony or short walk up to Thajiwas Glacier in the early afternoon, which sits at roughly 3,600 metres and offers views of the surrounding peaks. The glacier has seen recent collapses, so stick to marked paths and heed local advice. Spend the afternoon in the meadows around the main settlement, taking slow walks to help with altitude adjustment. Dine early at your guesthouse and rest; the altitude and thin air make this an evening for an early, light meal.

Plan 02

2 days in Sonamarg

  1. 01

Day 1: Arrival and Thajiwas Glacier

Arrive at midday. Spend the afternoon settling and walking gently in the meadows around the main bazaar to acclimatise. Visit Thajiwas Glacier on a pony trek or guided walk in the late afternoon, returning for an early dinner. Headaches and tiredness are common at this altitude, so rest early.

  2. 02

Day 2: Great Lakes Trek or Naran Meadow

If you are acclimatised and fit, hire a guide and take a pony trek towards Vishansar Lake or one of the other high alpine lakes on the Great Lakes Trek route, which makes a full day; most trekkers camp overnight and return a day later. Alternatively, take a gentler day walk through the Naran Meadow near the town, which is flatter and offers wildflower meadows, the Sind River and views of the surrounding peaks. End the day with time to walk the bazaar if energy allows, and pack for an early morning departure.

Plan 03

3 days in Sonamarg

  1. 01

Day 1: Arrival and Thajiwas Glacier

Arrive at midday. Spend the afternoon resting and acclimatising in the meadows. Visit Thajiwas Glacier on a pony trek in the late afternoon, returning for an early dinner and rest.

  2. 02

Day 2: Great Lakes Trek — Vishansar Lake

Start early with a guide, guestbook and packed lunch for a full-day trek on the Great Lakes Trek route towards Vishansar Lake. This is a demanding trek through high pasture with views of Mount Kolahoi and surrounding peaks. Most trekkers hire ponies to carry supplies. Camp overnight at Vishansar or return the same evening if you are a strong walker. The trek sits at altitudes above 3,500 metres, so a day of rest on Day 1 is essential.

  3. 03

Day 3: Lakes or return to Baltal

If you camped at Vishansar Lake, take a morning walk around the lake or continue to Krishansar Lake if energy and time allow, then return to Sonamarg by mid-afternoon. Alternatively, drive east to Baltal (about 15 km), the summer basecamp for the Amarnath Yatra, to see the pilgrimage route and the landscape that feeds the Yatra economy. Stop at Ganderbal town on the return to Srinagar to visit the Ganderbal bazaar or a local Sufi shrine if time permits.

Pacing

Make the plan work for everyone

  • Acclimatise before you exert yourself: Sonamarg sits at 2,730 m, a real jump from Srinagar's 1,600 m. Plan a quiet first afternoon rather than heading straight up to Thajiwas Glacier or setting out on a trek; headaches, breathlessness and poor sleep on arrival are common and usually settle within a day.
  • Check the road and tunnel situation before you set out: The Z-Morh Tunnel, open since January 2025, has made the Srinagar-Sonamarg stretch usable in most weather, but the road on to Zoji La and Ladakh still closes for winter and can be affected by landslides or maintenance work. Ask your driver or hotel for the current status rather than assuming it is open.
  • Carry cash: Card and UPI acceptance is inconsistent outside the larger hotels, and there is no reliable ATM network in Sonamarg itself. Withdraw what you need in Srinagar or Ganderbal before heading up.
  • Dress in layers, even in August: Daytime sun at this altitude is strong and afternoons can be mild, but temperatures drop close to freezing after dark for most of the season. A fleece or light down layer, plus a windproof shell, covers most of what you will need.
  • Bargain for ponies and guides before you set off: Pony hire for Thajiwas Glacier and guiding for longer treks is arranged informally rather than through a fixed price list. Agree the fare for the full return trip before you mount up or start walking, not partway through.
  • Mobile signal is patchy: Coverage in Sonamarg town is workable but thins out quickly towards Thajiwas, Baltal and the lake treks. Do not rely on your phone for navigation or emergencies once you are off the highway; tell your guesthouse or guide your plans instead.
