The short answer

Best areas to stay in Sonamarg

  1. 01

    Main bazaar (Sonamarg town centre)

Best for: Trekkers and hikers wanting easy access to guides, pony hire and the start of treks

A handful of guesthouses cluster near the main bazaar. There are no fancy hotels; most are simple, family-run places with basic rooms and shared or attached bathrooms. Water is sometimes heated using solar panels or wood fires, so hot showers are not guaranteed. Altitude acclimatisation can be difficult; headaches and poor sleep are common on the first night. Choose a guesthouse that serves good meals and offers a quiet room for resting.

  2. 02

Meadow edge (scattered guesthouses towards Thajiwas)

Best for: Nature lovers wanting views of the meadows and quieter surroundings

A few small guesthouses sit at the edge of the meadows, offering views of the valley and surrounding peaks. These are further from the bazaar (a short walk) and quieter, but less convenient if you need guides or supplies quickly. Ask about water and heating arrangements when booking; amenities are basic.

  3. 03

Baltal (15 km east, en route to Zoji La)

Best for: Pilgrims and visitors wanting to explore the Amarnath Yatra basecamp

Baltal is a valley settlement and the alternate starting point for the Amarnath Yatra. It sees heavy pilgrim traffic in July and August. A few guesthouses and dharamshalas (pilgrims' lodges) serve the yatra season. Outside the pilgrimage months (June and August), Baltal is quieter and offers a different perspective on Sonamarg's landscape and role in the region.

Before you book

What to check when booking for older travellers

  • Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
  • Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
  • Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
  • Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
  • Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.

Comfort notes for Sonamarg

  • Altitude is the main challenge: 2,730 metres is a significant elevation gain from sea level or even from Srinagar (1,600 m). Arrive from lower altitudes slowly; allow a day to acclimatise before attempting any trekking. Breathlessness, headaches, poor sleep and mild nausea are common. If you or a family member has heart or lung concerns, consult a doctor before travelling.
  • Do not over-exert on the first day. The Thajiwas Glacier walk on horseback is manageable if you are reasonably fit, but even that can feel harder than expected at this altitude. Take it slow, drink plenty of water and do not attempt longer treks on the first day.
  • Choose a guesthouse with reliable hot water and heating. Nights are cold even in summer, dropping close to freezing; good blankets and a warm room matter for sleep quality and health.
  • Food is simple and limited. If you have specific dietary needs or allergies, bring supplies from Srinagar or inform your guesthouse in advance. Cooking facilities are basic; some guesthouses can prepare simple meals on request if you warn them.
