Before you go

Thekkady with elderly parents: what to know

  • Thekkady is one of Kerala's gentlest destinations for older travellers. There are no steep temple steps or long climbs to major sights.
  • Book boat rides the evening before to guarantee a spot and avoid 5 am confusion. The boat ride itself is smooth and seated; dress warmly in layers as it is cool and misty on the water.
  • Plantation walks can be done at a slow pace with a guide who knows your fitness level. Ask your hotel to arrange a guide and specify 'gentle, flat walk' if needed.
  • Stay near the lake if you prefer quiet and coolness; the town bazaar can feel crowded in mid-morning. A midday rest is essential even in winter.
  • Choose a hotel with hot water, good heating and a pleasant seating area or garden. Rooms near the lake at night can be very cold.
  • Carry walking poles or a walking stick if you have mobility concerns; plantation paths can be uneven after rain.
  • Kumily bazaar is best explored in early morning or late afternoon; mid-morning crowds and vehicle noise are overwhelming. A hotel concierge can arrange a quiet shopping trip if you ask.

Easiest first

Places in Thekkady sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (8)

  • Abraham's Spice Garden (Places to visit · 45–75 minutes for a guided walk) — Paths through the two-acre garden are informal but mostly flat and shaded, with a slow, guide-led pace that suits older visitors; ask for a slower walk if needed, as guides are used to mixed-ability groups.
  • Chrissie's Cafe (Food and restaurants · 45–90 minutes for a meal) — Rooftop seating is reached by stairs or a lift depending on the building's layout; ask staff about lift access if stairs are difficult, and request a table away from the open edge if a view isn't essential.
  • Elephant Junction (Places to visit · 30 minutes for the shortest package up to a full day for extended programmes) — Getting on and off an elephant requires a platform step and some balance; feeding and photograph sessions from ground level are gentler alternatives for those who would rather not ride.
  • Kadathanadan Kalari & Navarasa Kathakali Centre (Culture and craft · About 1 hour per show) — Seating is in a gallery around a sunken pit, so there is no walking involved once seated, though the tiered seating may need a hand for those with knee or balance concerns; ask staff for an aisle or lower-tier seat.
  • Kumily Spice Market (Shopping · 45 minutes to browse; an hour or more if you stop for tastings and comparisons) — A flat, paved street with shops opening directly onto the pavement, so there is minimal walking strain, though the road can be narrow and busy with auto-rickshaws; keep to the shop side rather than the road edge.
  • Mudra Cultural Centre (Culture and craft · About 1.5–2 hours including the pre-show makeup viewing and the performance) — Fixed indoor seating for the full show with no walking required once inside, making it one of the more comfortable evening activities in Thekkady for those with limited mobility.
  • Periyar Lake Boat Cruise (Places to visit · 1–1.5 hours on the water, plus queuing and ticketing time) — You sit for the whole ride on a bench seat with a life jacket; there is no walking beyond the jetty ramp. Mornings are cold on the water, so a jacket matters more than mobility here.
  • Tribal Heritage Programme (Culture and craft · About 2 hours including transfer and the guided visit) — The visit is mostly seated conversation and viewing displayed artefacts, with only short walking between structures, making it manageable for most fitness levels; check the exact terrain when booking if mobility is a concern.

Some walking — plan a break (1)

  • Bamboo Rafting on Periyar Lake (Places to visit · A full day, roughly 8 am to 5 pm including forest trekking and the raft crossing) — Involves several hours of forest walking on uneven ground before and after the raft, so it suits reasonably active seniors rather than those needing level, paved paths. The rafting itself is seated and low-effort.

Lots of walking or steps — choose carefully (2)

  • Mangala Devi Temple (Places of worship · A half-day outing on the opening day, given the trek in and strict exit deadline) — The route into the forest to reach the temple is a genuine walk on natural terrain with a strict same-day exit deadline, so this suits fit, mobile visitors rather than those needing an easy day; check current route conditions with the forest department before attempting it.
  • Periyar Tiger Trail (Places to visit · 2 days/1 night or 3 days/2 nights, covering roughly 20–35 km on foot) — Not designed for limited mobility: this is sustained forest walking over two or three days with camping, so it suits fit older travellers rather than those with joint or heart concerns. There is no vehicle backup once you set off.

Practical tips for Thekkady

  • Cool, misty mornings. Thekkady sits in the hills and mornings, especially on the lake, are genuinely cold and misty even outside winter. Pack a proper jacket for the early boat cruise, not just a light layer, and expect the temperature to rise noticeably by mid-morning.
  • Getting around without a base bazaar. Thekkady has no old-city core to walk between sights; the boat jetty, plantations, cultural venues and hotels are spread across several kilometres. A hired car and driver for the day, or autos for short hops into Kumily, work better than trying to walk between attractions.
  • Boat and trek bookings fill up. The Periyar boat cruise, Tiger Trail and bamboo rafting all run limited daily slots through the reserve's own booking counters. Book the evening before, or ask your hotel to call ahead, rather than assuming a walk-up spot on the day.
  • Money and cards. Larger hotels and resorts accept cards, but smaller spice shops, cafes and ecotourism ticket counters often expect cash. Carry enough rupees for market shopping and activity bookings, and withdraw from an ATM in Kumily rather than assuming card acceptance everywhere.
  • Dress and footwear. Sturdy, closed shoes with grip matter more here than in most Kerala towns, since plantation paths and forest trails can be muddy or uneven. Carry a rain layer outside the driest months, and modest clothing for the Mangala Devi Temple's annual opening if your visit coincides with it.
  • Photography and phone signal. Mobile signal is patchy inside the reserve and on some forest trails, so download maps and confirm meeting points before setting off. Photography inside the reserve is generally fine, but flash and drones are typically restricted; check current rules at the ecotourism office.
  • Spice shopping pace. Kumily's spice shops can feel high-pressure with smell tests and sales pitches. Compare prices at two or three shops before committing to a larger purchase, and buy sealed, labelled packets rather than loose spice if you are flying internationally.
  • Elephant tourism, thoughtfully. If an elephant camp is on your list, research current animal-welfare reviews first and consider a feeding-only option over riding. The Periyar boat cruise offers a wild-elephant sighting alternative that involves no direct animal interaction.
