The temple was conceived by Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya, the founder of Banaras Hindu University, and built with support from the Birla family, which is why it is also called the Birla Temple. It was completed in the 1960s and was designed as a replica of the old Vishwanath temple on a much larger scale. Its spire is often described as one of the tallest temple towers in India.
From the start it was intended to be open to everyone, regardless of caste or religion. That was a significant statement at the time it was built, and the temple still carries that open spirit. For many Varanasi families it is a regular place of worship, and for visitors it offers an easier, calmer Vishwanath darshan.

How to experience it
Drive into the BHU campus, which is itself a pleasure after the old city, with wide avenues, old trees and university buildings. The temple rises at the centre of the campus. Leave footwear at the counter and walk up the few steps into the main hall, where the Shiva lingam is enshrined. Darshan is usually unhurried, and seniors can sit inside for a while without pressure.
Look at the walls. Verses from the Bhagavad Gita and other scriptures are inscribed in marble. The temple also houses shrines to other deities on its upper level. Afterwards, rest on the lawns or at the small canteen area near the temple, which is popular with students.
Pair it with Bharat Kala Bhavan, the university's museum, only a few minutes' drive away. Together they make a comfortable, mostly level half-day with plenty of breaks.
