Ajmer sits on National Highway 48, roughly 2.5-3 hours by car from Jaipur and about 6-7 hours from Delhi; roads are generally good but can be busy near Jaipur.
Getting around Ajmer
The Dargah and old-city bazaars are best explored on foot once you arrive, but a private car and driver is worth hiring for Taragarh Fort and the Jain temples, which involve a steep approach; app cabs cover the newer parts of town.

Easy transfers to and in Ajmer
- Hire a car and driver for Taragarh Fort and the Jain temples. Walking up from the base is steep; vehicles reduce the climb.
- Book a hotel with a lift and easy car access. Lake embankment hotels are generally easier than old-city lanes.
- Carry water, a hat, and sunscreen. The lake embankment and fort views are very exposed. Marble floors in temples can be very hot underfoot in afternoon.
- Ask the airline or railway for wheelchair or porter assistance when you book, not on the day.
- Pre-book the pickup from the airport or station, so nobody has to negotiate with drivers after a long journey.
- Choose arrivals in daylight where you can, and keep the first afternoon free to rest.
