Key hubs

Bodh Gaya airport and railway station

Nearest airport
Gaya Airport (GAY) is about 15–20 km away, roughly 30–45 minutes by road, traffic dependent. Most international visitors fly into Patna (Indira Gandhi International, 100 km away, about 2–2.5 hours by road).
Railway station
Gaya Junction (GY) is the main station, about 15 km south of Bodh Gaya; the town is also accessible via shared jeeps and taxis from there.
Getting around
The town centre is walkable, with most major sites within 1–2 km of each other. Hire a local taxi or jeep for longer trips, such as to nearby monasteries on the outskirts or the airport.

Easy transfers to and in Bodh Gaya

  • Hire a local taxi or jeep for your stay rather than walking long distances, especially in summer months. The town is small enough that a vehicle makes trips to outlying monasteries easy.
  • Wear comfortable walking shoes and carry water, a hat and sunscreen. The temple courtyard has shaded areas, but much of the walking is in open sun.
  • Ask the airline or railway for wheelchair or porter assistance when you book, not on the day.
  • Pre-book the pickup from the airport or station, so nobody has to negotiate with drivers after a long journey.
  • Choose arrivals in daylight where you can, and keep the first afternoon free to rest.
