Day 1: Mylapore temples and beach

Start early at Kapaleeshwarar Temple in Mylapore for the morning prayers. Wear long pants and cover your shoulders; women should carry a scarf. Spend an hour inside, then walk through the narrow lanes of East Tank Street and Mylapore, stopping for South Indian breakfast at a local dhaba or small restaurant—idli, dosa, and strong coffee. After rest during the heat, visit Marina Beach in the late afternoon, walk along the shore, and see the Kannagi statue and the spread of the beach as light softens. End with dinner at one of the older restaurants near the beach or in Mylapore, then a gentle evening walk.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Kapaleeshwarar Temple45 minutes to 1.5 hoursModerateEarly morning (6–8 am) for a quieter visit; weekday mornings are less crowded than weekends or festival days
Marina Beach1–2 hours for a walkEasyEarly morning (5–7 am) or late afternoon (4–6 pm), October to March

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Kapaleeshwarar Temple: The temple courtyard and corridors involve some narrow passages and a few steps, but nothing strenuous. The tank corridor is level and can be walked slowly. For those with mobility issues, the outer sections and the gopuram view from the street are accessible without entering the inner sanctum.

    Day 2: Fort and museums

Morning: visit Fort St. George, the oldest British fort in India, which houses St. Mary's Church and the Fort Museum. The fort is compact and mostly level. Afternoon: rest, then visit the Government Museum in an air-conditioned setting, or wander the lanes of George Town to see the colonial architecture and Parry's Corner. If you prefer the beach, Elliot's Beach in Besant Nagar is quieter than Marina Beach and has a pleasant promenade with cafés. Evening: return to Mylapore for dinner or explore T. Nagar for a more commercial evening.

Day 3: Coastal drive and nearby temples, or Mahabalipuram

Option A—Stay local: visit San Thome Cathedral Basilica (a living, working cathedral in Gothic style) in Mylapore, then head to Guindy National Park for a morning walk if interested in nature. Option B—Day trip to Mahabalipuram, about 60 km south (90 minutes by road): the Shore Temple, rock carvings and the Five Rathas are among India's finest heritage sites. Return to Chennai by evening. Either way, end with a slow dinner and reflection on the pace of the city.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Mahabalipuram4–6 hours including travel; 2–3 hours in town itselfModerateOctober to March for comfortable weather; early morning or late afternoon to avoid midday heat
San Thome Cathedral Basilica30–45 minutesEasyMorning (8–10 am) or late afternoon (4–6 pm); avoid service times (typically 6–7 am and 6–7 pm on weekdays)
Guindy National Park1–1.5 hoursEasyEarly morning between October and March; early morning is best for spotting deer and birds

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Mahabalipuram: The Shore Temple involves some walking and climbing short flights of steps. The Descent of the Ganges (open-air rock carving) and Krishna Butterball require gentle walking on uneven ground. A local guide and a car with a shaded waiting area help. Restaurants and rest points are scattered around the town.

Pacing

Pacing a Chennai trip for parents and children

  • Do not underestimate the heat. Plan temple visits for early morning, rest completely during 1–4 pm, and venture out again at 5 pm. Dehydration and heat exhaustion are real risks here.
  • Wear light cotton clothes, a hat, sunscreen (SPF 50+) and good sunglasses. Temple floors get very hot; carry socks or wear sandals that slip off easily.
  • Choose Mylapore or Besant Nagar as your base. Both are walkable and quieter than George Town. If staying in Mylapore, ensure your hotel has air-conditioning and a lift.
  • Hire a car and driver for sightseeing, at least for the first day. Taxis and autos are chaotic; a driver lets you rest between sights and keeps you cool.
  • Eat at established restaurants and avoid street food if your digestion is sensitive. South Indian meals are light and healthy; local coffee shops are safe and beloved by locals.
  • Humidity worsens from March onwards. If you have respiratory issues, visit October to January. The monsoon (June–September) brings heavy rains and flooding in some areas.
