Mylapore
Best for: Temple devotion, old lanes, walkability and authentic food
Good to know: The heart of Chennai's Brahmin heritage, with temples, narrow lanes and small heritage hotels. East Tank Street and the temple streets are busy, atmospheric and close to everything. The trade-off is traffic, narrow lanes where cars struggle, and crowds during temple hours. But for the lived experience of the city, Mylapore is unmatched. Small hotels and guest houses are plentiful and cheap.

Besant Nagar (Bessie)
Best for: Beach access, quieter walks, and a younger, laid-back vibe
Good to know: A seaside neighbourhood with Elliot's Beach, which is quieter than Marina. Cafés, small shops and a promenade. About 30 minutes by car from Fort St. George and further from the airport, but if you want beach and calm, this is it. More upscale hotels here.

George Town and Fort
Best for: Colonial heritage, history and central location
Good to know: Close to Fort St. George, the harbour and old commercial streets. Parry's Corner is nearby. Can be chaotic with traffic and crowds, but is central for all sightseeing. Hotels here tend to be older and cheaper. Not quieter, but authentic and convenient.

Best for: Shopping, restaurants and a more modern feel
Good to know: A commercial neighbourhood with shops, malls, restaurants and buses. Less heritage than Mylapore but convenient and with good amenities. About 20–30 minutes from most sights depending on traffic. Good for families who want comfort and shopping rather than atmosphere.

Good to know: The main road of the city, with high-rise hotels, malls and traffic. Convenient for the airport and central areas, but lacks neighbourhood character. Good for business travellers and families who want modernity and air-conditioning.
