How to experience it
The Elephant Stables is a long, narrow building of eleven vaulted chambers arranged in a row, each with a large entrance arch and an interior chamber that could hold two elephants. The arches and vaults are built in a style that shows Mughal influence mixed with local stone carving.
Walk slowly along the row of arches, looking at the details: the carved bosses at the vault intersections, the proportions of the chambers, the narrowing perspective as the row recedes. Imagine the elephants standing in the cool darkness, their mahouts caring for them. The largest chambers are those at the ends; the middle ones are smaller.
Inside one or two of the chambers, sit quietly and let your eyes adjust to the dim light. The scale of the arches, built to accommodate large animals and the people caring for them, becomes clear. Step outside again into the sunlight and the whole row is revealed in perspective.
