Before you go

Kaziranga with elderly parents: what to know

  • Book an elephant safari instead of or alongside a jeep safari. Open jeeps on bumpy tracks are tiring; elephant backs move more gently and sometimes offer closer animal views.
  • Do the early safari (dawn start is unavoidable for good viewing), but rest thoroughly after. A 3–4 hour morning activity followed by a 4–5 hour afternoon rest is the standard rhythm.
  • Choose a hotel with a ground-floor room; many properties lack lifts. Ask about this when booking.
  • Hire a car and driver if you plan to visit multiple gates or do side trips like Mikir Hill. Roads are rough in places, and having your own vehicle with a driver means you can rest between stops.
  • Carry broad-spectrum sunscreen, a hat, water, and socks for open jeep time. The sun reflects off the grass, and there is no shade during safari.
  • Ask your hotel to arrange hotel-to-gate transport; walking to gates or from parking areas can be far. Some gates have long walks from the car park to the jeep assembly point.
  • Hospitals are in Guwahati (3–4 hours away) or Jorhat (45 minutes). The nearest primary health centre in Kaziranga is basic. Ensure you have any essential medicines with you and travel insurance that covers the region.

Easiest first

Places in Kaziranga sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (15)

  • Agaratoli Park Gate (Culture and craft · 3–4 hours for a safari; varies by route) — Jeep-based, with similar comfort considerations to Kohora safaris. Bumpy on uneven ground, but the route may be shorter or less intense than Kohora's longer drives. The gate itself has basic facilities.
  • Bagori Park Gate (Culture and craft · 3–4 hours for a safari) — Jeep-based, with similar considerations as other gates. Bumpy but manageable if you are fit enough for a jeep ride.
  • Brahmaputra River (Places to visit · Seen as part of a safari or viewed from your hotel, 20–30 minutes focused viewing) — Viewed from the jeep or your lodge, usually from a distance. No walking required unless you choose to walk a river bank at your hotel, which is manageable on level ground.
  • Diphlu River (Places to visit · Visited as part of a jeep safari, 30 minutes to 1 hour focus) — The river is viewed from the jeep at a distance. No walking beyond the jeep is needed. River-side camps or bird hides involve sitting, which is suitable for older travellers if their knees allow dismounting from the jeep.
  • Elephant Safari (Culture and craft · 2–3 hours) — The elephant pace is slow and the movement is rhythmic, which is easier on aging joints than a jolting jeep. The ride itself is less strenuous. However, mounting and dismounting the elephant requires some physical agility, and the heat and sun exposure are similar. Bring a wide-brimmed hat and water.
  • Jeep Safari Experience (Culture and craft · 3–4 hours per safari (you can do one morning and one afternoon safari on the same day)) — Jeeps have seats, but the ride is bumpy on uneven grassland paths. Older travellers should go early (less heat and shorter route), wear a wide-brimmed hat, and bring water. The jeep does not stop for long, so comfort rests depend on your physical tolerance for jostling; backache is common.
  • Kaziranga Interpretation Centre (Places to visit · 1–1.5 hours) — Indoors and air-conditioned, with level galleries and seating throughout. One of the best places to understand Kaziranga if you have limited mobility or heat sensitivity.
  • Kaziranga Reptile and Rescue Centre (Places to visit · 30–45 minutes) — Mostly level indoors, air-conditioned, with seating available. A good break from sun and heat. Few steps between sections. One of the most comfortable places to spend time during a hot afternoon in Kaziranga.
  • Kohora Village (Places to visit · Half a day to full day for walks and village interactions) — The village is flat and compact, and homestay owners are accustomed to visitors of all ages. Paths are not paved but are well-worn. Homestays range in comfort from basic to moderate; confirm amenities before booking.
  • Kohora Visitor Centre (Culture and craft · 20–30 minutes) — The centre is indoors and air-conditioned with mostly level ground. A few steps connect the gallery spaces, but there is seating throughout. It is one of the most comfortable places to spend time in Kaziranga, suitable for older travellers even on very hot days.
  • Maruti Hotel Restaurant (Food and restaurants · 45 minutes to 1 hour for a meal) — The restaurant is on a busy street with street-level entry. Tables are close together; the atmosphere is loud and bustling, which some find charming and others tiring. There is no frills or special accommodation for elderly visitors, but the staff are helpful if asked.
  • Orang National Park (Places to visit · 3–4 hours including travel and safari) — Boat safaris on the Brahmaputra are gentler on the body than jeeps; there is less jolting and you can move at your own pace. The boat is open to the sun and wind, so sun protection and warm layers (in winter) are needed.
  • Panbari Wildlife Sanctuary (Places to visit · 2–3 hours including travel and a walk) — Walks are on flat wetland paths with few obstacles. The area is open and exposed, so sun protection matters; early or late visits are more comfortable than midday.
  • Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary (Places to visit · 2–3 hours including drive and safari) — Pobitora is compact and accessible by a short jeep safari. The drive from Kaziranga or Guwahati is not long, and the sanctuary is flat with no strenuous walking.
  • Roni Beel (Places to visit · 1–2 hours as part of an afternoon safari) — Viewed entirely from the jeep. The wetland is flooded, so you do not approach it on foot. The jeep routes around it are level and manageable for older travellers, though long observation from a jeep can cause discomfort in the lower back.

Some walking — plan a break (4)

  • Assam State Zoo, Guwahati (Places to visit · 2–3 hours at the zoo, plus 4–5 hours' road travel each way; best combined with a Guwahati stay) — The zoo has paths and benches, but it is spread over a large area and distances between enclosures are substantial. A car or golf cart ride (if available) helps, and starting early avoids crowd and heat.
  • Guwahati City (Places to visit · Half a day to full day for walks and markets; allow extra for travel) — The city is sprawling and congested. Walking is possible but involves dodging traffic and crowds. Auto-rickshaws are cheap and essential for getting between sights. The river embankment walks are flat and pleasant. Hotels range from basic to mid-range; confirm amenities when booking.
  • Manas National Park (Places to visit · Full day: 3 hours road each way, 3–4 hours safari) — The jeep safari is similar to Kaziranga's. Access roads are rougher and the drive is longer. Confirm your fitness and tolerance for long road journeys before booking. The river location is scenic, and rest stops are available.
  • Mikir Hill (Places to visit · 2–3 hours including drive) — The path to the top is steady walking on uneven terrain without steep scrambling, and cars can usually drive partway up. The final stretch involves a moderate uphill walk; rest spots are limited, so pace yourself.
