Before you go

Kochi with elderly parents: what to know

  • Fort Kochi is walkable and mostly flat, but many heritage buildings have steep, narrow stairs and uneven floors. Wear comfortable, flat shoes with good grip, and visit churches and the synagogue during cooler morning hours.
  • Heat and humidity are the main challenge, especially April to September. Plan your main walking time for early morning or late afternoon. Rest indoors with air conditioning during midday (roughly 1 pm to 4 pm), and carry water, a hat and sunscreen.
  • Stay in Fort Kochi proper if you enjoy walking; stay in Ernakulam if you prefer a modern hotel and want a car for sightseeing. Either way, book a hotel with reliable lifts, good air conditioning and water supply—power cuts and water shortages can happen.
  • A backwater houseboat is one of the most relaxing ways to experience Kerala. Unlike group tours, a private houseboat lets you move at your own pace, rest whenever you like, and have meals on board. Budget ₹5,000–₹8,000 per person for a half-day; overnight trips are ₹8,000–₹15,000 per person in shared boats.
  • Hire a car and driver for visits to Mattancherry, temples outside Fort Kochi, or day trips to villages. Auto-rickshaws are fun but can be jerky and noisy on longer distances. Car hire is roughly ₹800–₹1,500 per 8-hour day depending on the vehicle.
  • Tipping is not expected but appreciated in restaurants (10% for sit-down dining). Dress respectfully for temples (no shorts or sleeveless tops; remove shoes at the entrance) and the synagogue (women should cover shoulders and legs).
  • Pharmacies and hospitals (including Lakeshore Hospital and Medical Trust Institute) are concentrated in Ernakulam, a 30-minute ride from Fort Kochi. Note your hotel's nearest clinic and carry any regular medicines in original bottles.

Easiest first

  • Bolgatty Palace (Places to visit · 1–2 hours, plus ferry travel) — The palace grounds are level. There is little walking required, and the pace is leisurely. Seating is available on the lawns and indoors. The ferry ride to the island is gentle and short.
  • Chinese Fishing Nets (Culture and craft · 30–45 minutes) — There are no stairs. The wooden platforms are level and a few benches are available. The area can be crowded with tourists, so go early in the evening or on a quieter day. The smell of fish and the dock environment may not suit all temperaments.
  • Cochin Port (Places to visit · 15–30 minutes) — The waterfront is flat and walkable. There are benches along the harbor front. The area can be crowded with workers and vehicles; watch your step and stay on designated paths.
  • Fort Kochi Beach (Places to visit · 30 minutes to 1 hour) — A car can drop you at the beach entrance. There is a small promenade and benches. The beach itself is sandy and easy to walk on. It is flat and rest-friendly.
  • Indo-Portuguese Museum (Places to visit · 1–1.5 hours) — The museum is indoors and small, with modest stairs between floors. It is air-conditioned. Seating is available in some galleries. It is manageable for most older travellers.
  • Jewish History Museum (Places to visit · 30–45 minutes) — The museum is small and mostly on one level, though the synagogue may have steps. It is air-conditioned and indoor, making it good for hot afternoons. Rest time is available.
  • Kathakali Performance (Culture and craft · 1.5–2 hours (performance plus travel)) — You sit in an air-conditioned or covered theatre. No physical exertion. Some performances have English introductions or synopses, which help. Ideal for older travellers wanting a cultural experience without walking.
  • Kerala Backwaters (Kochi region) (Culture and craft · 2–4 hours (half or full day if cruising)) — Houseboat and motorboat options are excellent for older travellers, as they sit and watch the landscape. The boats have basic seating, often no air conditioning, so morning or late afternoon is more comfortable. Walking along the canal roads above the water is flat and easy but can be hot in summer.
  • Kumbalangi Village (Places to visit · 2–4 hours, half or full day) — The village is flat and quiet. Walking pace is gentle. The bird sanctuary has a viewing tower and flat paths. Facilities are basic, so bring water and snacks. A private motorboat ride is very comfortable for older travellers.
  • Mararikulam Beach (Places to visit · 2–4 hours for a beach half-day) — The beach is sandy and flat. A few simple hotels and shacks have seating. The beach is not developed with facilities, so bring water and snacks. The walk is easy, and sitting time is comfortable.
  • Marine Drive (Places to visit · 1–2 hours, especially in the evening) — The promenade is paved, flat and has benches at intervals. A car can drop you at one end. The walk is level and manageable for most older travellers. Restaurants nearby have seating and shade.
  • Paradesi Synagogue (Places of worship · 30–45 minutes) — The synagogue is on a narrow street and has a few steps to enter, but the interior is level. Seating is available. The atmosphere is calm and not physically demanding, though the surrounding market street is crowded and can feel overwhelming.
  • Santa Cruz Basilica (Places to visit · 20–30 minutes) — The interior is open and spacious, with few stairs. Pews provide seating. The building is cool and calm. There is little physical exertion.
  • Sri Poornathrayeesa Temple (Places of worship · 45–60 minutes, plus travel) — The temple is on relatively level ground. There are steps to the main sanctum, but the outer areas and courts are accessible. Seating is limited but available. The atmosphere is calm and not physically demanding.
  • St. Francis Church (Places to visit · 15–25 minutes) — The church is on a level, shaded street. The interior has a few steps but is otherwise accessible. There are benches to sit and rest inside.

Some walking — plan a break (5)

  • Fort Kochi Heritage Walk (Places to visit · 2–4 hours) — Fort Kochi's streets are flat and the walking is gentle. The main lanes are broad and have cafés at frequent intervals. The heat and humidity can be challenging; an early start or evening walk is advisable. The narrow, less-touristy lanes can be slippery when wet.
  • Jew Town Spice Walk (Culture and craft · 1.5–2.5 hours with a guide; longer if shopping) — The lanes are narrow, crowded and steep in places, with uneven cobblestones. There is no shade, and the spice dust can irritate breathing. Older travellers with mobility concerns may find it tiring. Shoes with grip are essential. Short, early-morning walks are better than long afternoon ones.
  • Mattancherry Palace (Places to visit · 45–90 minutes) — There are stairs and the rooms are on multiple floors. The palace has few lifts or ramps. Handrails are available in some places. The heat inside can be intense without air conditioning. Seating is minimal.
  • Spice Market (Jew Town) (Shopping · 45–90 minutes) — The lanes are narrow and uneven. There are no pavements in places, and the ground is often wet from washing. A few cafés offer seating. Some warehouses have steps; ask if you want to go inside. The market smell and lack of shade may be challenging for some visitors.
  • Thrippunithura Sree Poornathrayeesa Temple (Places of worship · 1–2 hours (temple visit plus time in town)) — The temple has steps up to the sanctum and an outer courtyard that is flat. Visitors remove footwear. The courtyards are open-air and can be hot. Early morning is more comfortable. Seating is limited.
