Key hubs

Kushinagar airport and railway station

Nearest airport
Gorakhpur Airport (GOP), about 50–55 km away and roughly 1.5 hours by road, has the most regular flights. Kushinagar's own airport has had few scheduled flights; check before planning around it. Varanasi (VNS), about 250 km away, is an alternative.
Railway station
Kushinagar has no railway station. The nearest are Deoria Sadar (about 35 km) and Gorakhpur Junction (about 51 km), which is the better-connected choice.
Getting around
Most sites are within the town or a short drive. Hire a local taxi or auto-rickshaw for the day to visit Rambhar Stupa, the Japanese and Thai temples, and outlying areas. Walks between central sites are manageable in cool months.

Easy transfers to and in Kushinagar

  • Hire a taxi for the full day rather than walking between temples. The town's distances are manageable, but the heat in warm months and uneven ground on some paths make a vehicle prudent.
  • There are few pharmacies and no large hospital in Kushinagar; if you require regular medications or have health concerns, carry backups and consider staying close to Gorakhpur (50 km away) where hospital care is available.
  • Ask the airline or railway for wheelchair or porter assistance when you book, not on the day.
  • Pre-book the pickup from the airport or station, so nobody has to negotiate with drivers after a long journey.
  • Choose arrivals in daylight where you can, and keep the first afternoon free to rest.
