Before you go

Kushinagar with elderly parents: what to know

  • The Mahaparinirvana Temple has a level, paved approach and level floors inside. The reclining Buddha is at eye level in a cool, dark hall—ideal for those with mobility concerns.
  • Visit the main temple early (6–7 a.m.) or late (4–5 p.m.) to avoid midday heat and the small afternoon pilgrim crowds. The morning light in the temple is very peaceful.
  • Hire a taxi for the full day rather than walking between temples. The town's distances are manageable, but the heat in warm months and uneven ground on some paths make a vehicle prudent.
  • Choose a hotel very close to the temple (within 200 metres) to minimize walks at dawn or in hot afternoons. Fatigue from heat affects older travellers sharply.
  • The Kushinagar Museum is small, air-conditioned and level—a good midday break. Allow 45 minutes; there is seating inside.
  • Bring a wide-brimmed hat, sunscreen and high SPF sunglasses. The temple grounds offer some shade, but the walks and gardens expose you to sun.
  • There are few pharmacies and no large hospital in Kushinagar; if you require regular medications or have health concerns, carry backups and consider staying close to Gorakhpur (50 km away) where hospital care is available.
