Before you go
Munnar with elderly parents: what to know
- Altitude of 1,600m means some people feel light-headed or short of breath for the first day or two. Consult your doctor before travelling if you have heart or breathing concerns. Drink water and move slowly on arrival.
- Eravikulam National Park and Anamudi involve a steep half-hour climb for the full experience. If this is too much, the lower tea-garden walks and viewpoints are equally rewarding and entirely level.
- Tea estate walks are on uneven ground but flat. Wear proper walking shoes with grip, not flip-flops. The trails are easy if you take them slowly.
- Choose a hotel with a lift if mobility is a concern. Central Munnar has smaller buildings with stairs; resorts are more likely to have ground-floor rooms or lifts.
- Hire a car and driver for the entire stay. Munnar is spread across steep roads, and taxis are unpredictable in the hills. A car costs roughly ₹1,500–₹2,500 per day.
- Afternoons are warm even at altitude. Rest between 1pm and 4pm, and do your drives and walks in the morning or late afternoon.
- Emergency medical facilities are in town. Note the location of the primary health centre or hospital closest to your hotel before sightseeing.
Easiest first
Places in Munnar sorted by walking effort
Easy on the legs (12)
- Chakkupallam Waterfall (Culture and craft · 1.5–2 hours with the drive) — The walk to the waterfall is on a forest path, mostly level but can be wet and slippery, especially in monsoon. If mobility is limited or balance is uncertain, consult a local guide. The waterfall itself is accessible when reached.
- Echo Point (Places to visit · 30 minutes to 1 hour) — A car can pull over at the viewpoint. The ground is level and there are usually benches and rest areas. No walking required except what you choose to do at the site.
- Idukki Arch Dam (Places to visit · 2–3 hours with driving) — The walk across the dam top is flat and short, about 200 metres, but very high with a drop to the gorge below. There is a railing, but heights can be challenging for people with vertigo. The overlook areas have benches. Mobility is not an issue, but nerve is.
- KDHP Tea Museum (Places to visit · 1–1.5 hours) — The museum is mostly on one floor with easy walking, though the tea factory area can be warm and the odour of processing tea strong. There are no stairs of concern and rest areas are available.
- Kundala Lake (Places to visit · 2–3 hours with the drive) — A car drops you at the lake entrance. The walking path is flat and paved in sections, though some parts are rougher. Benches and resting spots are scattered around. The lake is accessible, and the pace is entirely yours.
- Kurangani Top Station (Places to visit · 3–4 hours with driving) — The road is motorable and the viewpoint walk is minimal. Slightly lower elevation than Top Station, so less risk of altitude concern. Benches are available.
- Lockhart Tea Museum (Places to visit · 1–1.5 hours) — The museum is housed in a bungalow with mostly level access, though some galleries may involve short flights of stairs. Rest areas are available. The setting among tea fields is pleasant.
- Marayur (Places to visit · 3–4 hours with driving) — The plantation roads are mostly motorable, and walking trails through sections are gentle and flat. The air is humid and can be warm compared to high Munnar. Suitable for older travellers who want movement without steep terrain.
- Mattupetty Dam and Lake (Places to visit · 1.5–2 hours) — A car can drop you at the boat house. Boating is very accessible for all ages and abilities. If you walk around the reservoir, the path is gentle but uneven, so sturdy shoes help.
- Pothamedu (Culture and craft · 1.5–2 hours) — The viewpoint is reached by a short walk on a paved path with benches. The spice garden walk is on flat, maintained trails. A car can drop you close to the entrance. It is one of the most senior-friendly stops in Munnar.
- Thekkadi (Periyar Wildlife Area) (Places to visit · 5–6 hours with driving) — Boat tours are the main activity and require good balance getting in and out of the boat and sitting for 2–3 hours. If older travellers struggle with balance, it can be challenging. Walking trails around the lake are easier. Consult with staff about mobility options.
- Top Station (Places to visit · 2–3 hours with the drive from town) — A short, flat walk from the parking area to the main viewpoint, with benches. The road is winding but motorable. The real demand is the altitude: older travellers should consult a doctor before going above 2,000 metres, and should move slowly. There is a café at the top.
Some walking — plan a break (7)
- Carmelagiri Elephant Park (Culture and craft · 2–3 hours with driving) — The facilities are spread across hillside terrain with some steep sections and uneven ground. Bathing an elephant involves standing in a stream and can be slippery. If mobility is limited, speak with the staff about what is realistic. There is usually a vehicle available to move between areas.
- Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary (Places to visit · 5–6 hours, including travel and a guided walk or jeep safari) — Jeep safaris are available and kinder to joints than walking. The forest floor is uneven, though the paths are established. A guide will slow the pace to suit the group. Carry water and a hat; there is little shade.
- Eravikulam National Park (Places to visit · 3–4 hours, including drive and walk) — A car can drive almost to the park boundary. The walk inside on grass tracks is flat and unhurried, but the altitude (2,000+ metres) may affect older travellers unaccustomed to height. Bring water, eat light breakfast, and rest if you feel any dizziness. The ridge path has no shade but few steep stretches.
- Kannan Devan Hills Tea Estate (Culture and craft · 2–3 hours, including a guided walk and tea factory visit) — Estate walks are unhurried and on established paths through tea plantations. The terrain is gently rolling, not steep. Guides will go slowly and can pause to rest. Wear comfortable walking shoes with grip.
- Kolukkumalai (Culture and craft · 4–5 hours, including drive both ways and time at the top) — The drive is steep, bumpy and involves hairpin turns on a narrow road. Older travellers with back or joint issues may find it uncomfortable. Those who can manage the drive will find the viewpoint itself flat and easy to walk. Have motion sickness tablets ready if you are prone to carsickness.
- Kurinjimala Sanctuary (Places to visit · 4–5 hours, including travel, walk and rest) — The drive is steep and winding but not as rough as Kolukkumalai. At the top, walks are gentle on grass paths. The altitude (2,000+ metres) may affect those unaccustomed to height. Bring water and rest if you feel dizzy.
- Rajakkad (Places to visit · 3–4 hours with driving) — The terrain is hilly and some plantation paths can be uneven. A car can reach villages, but exploring plantations means walking on paths between plants. If mobility is limited, driving through and stopping at viewpoints is realistic rather than walking plantations.
Lots of walking or steps — choose carefully (1)
- Anamudi (Places to visit · 5–6 hours including the trek, guide, rest and descent) — This trek is not suitable for older travellers or those with mobility concerns. The path is steep, muddy in places, exposed to wind, and above 2,500 metres; there is no shelter. Senior visitors can stand at the Eravikulam ridge below and look at Anamudi from a distance, or drive to the top station for a more accessible experience.
