There is no railway in Ladakh; Leh, reached by air or a long mountain road, is the effective railhead-equivalent for onward travel.

The only route in is by road over Khardung La, one of the world's highest motorable passes, open only in the warmer months; no public transport runs this road, so a private vehicle is required.

For parents and senior travellers
Easy transfers to and in Nubra Valley
- Use a private car with a good driver who knows the Khardung La road; it is narrow, often one-way, and has no guard rails. Commercial taxis do not usually operate on this route.
- Carry high-SPF sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses: the altitude intensifies UV and glare off sand and rock. Sunburn happens faster than you expect.
- Ask the airline or railway for wheelchair or porter assistance when you book, not on the day.
- Pre-book the pickup from the airport or station, so nobody has to negotiate with drivers after a long journey.
- Choose arrivals in daylight where you can, and keep the first afternoon free to rest.
