Before you go

Prayagraj with elderly parents: what to know

  • Visit the Sangam at dawn, before the heat and crowds. If you plan to bathe, wear sturdy shoes for the steep ghat steps, and bring helpers to support you on the uneven stone.
  • Hire a car and driver for the full duration. Allahabad is hot and distances between sights are manageable by car but tiring on foot.
  • Plan one major activity per morning (Sangam aarti, fort, or museum) and rest through the hottest hours (12 pm to 4 pm). Use late afternoons and early evenings for lighter activities.
  • Temples and ghats have no lifts and involve steps or uneven ground. The Allahabad Museum, Anand Bhavan and Alfred Park are level and comfortable. Plan accordingly.
  • Stay in the Cantonment area or near Shastri Bridge, where hotels have lifts, restaurants serve diverse cuisines, and hospitals are accessible.
  • Carry water, a wide-brimmed hat, sunscreen and a walking stick. Wear light cotton clothes and slip-on shoes, as you may need to remove footwear at temples.
  • Note the location of the nearest pharmacy or hospital (Motilal Nehru Medical College or civil hospitals are the major ones). Inform your hotel of any health concerns at check-in.

Easiest first

Places in Prayagraj sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (12)

  • Akshaya Vat (Places of worship · 30–45 minutes including prayer and rest) — The temple enclosure is level, and there are benches for rest. Entry involves a few low steps into the courtyard, but these are gentle. Older travellers can easily manage this site.
  • Alfred Park (Places to visit · 45 minutes to 1.5 hours for a walk and rest) — The park is entirely flat, with many benches. It is ideal for older travellers and those needing rest. Walking paths are well-maintained.
  • Allahabad Museum (Places to visit · 1–2 hours) — The ground floor is flat and comfortable. The upper floor is accessible by stairs, but there are benches for rest in most galleries. Seniors can manage the ground floor easily and skip the upper floor if tired.
  • Anand Bhavan (Places to visit · 1.5–2 hours) — The house has some steps between levels, but mostly it is flat walking on ground and first floors. Benches are available in several rooms. Older visitors can manage it without difficulty.
  • Bade Hanuman Temple (Places of worship · 45 minutes to 1 hour) — The main prayer hall is at ground level. There are queues and standing, but benches and side areas offer rest. Older visitors can participate without undue strain, though crowds during peak hours can be tiring.
  • Cantonment Area (Places to visit · 1–2 hours) — The Cantonment has wide, tree-lined streets and is flat, though distances between buildings can be large. A car is helpful for moving between areas of interest. This is a comfortable neighbourhood for older travellers to explore at a slow pace.
  • Chandra Shekhar Azad Park (Places to visit · 30–60 minutes) — The park has flat paths, benches throughout and plenty of shade from large trees. A car can drop you at the entrance and there is no climbing needed. This is one of the easiest sightseeing options in Prayagraj for older travellers.
  • High Court Building (Places to visit · 20–45 minutes) — You walk around the building on flat ground with no climbing. A car can drop you nearby. This is an easy stop with minimal physical demand.
  • Prayagraj Junction Railway Station (Places to visit · 20–30 minutes) — The main hall and platform areas are flat with benches available. A car can drop you at the station entrance. This is an easy visit with no climbing.
  • Saraswati Ghat (Places to visit · 1–1.5 hours) — The ghat has steps to the water, but the upper platforms are level and have benches. Seniors can sit and watch the river without descending. It is very manageable.
  • Triveni Sangam (Places to visit · 2–3 hours; longer if you bathe or stay for aarti) — The ghats have many steps to the water, and the ground can be slippery, especially in winter when it's wet. Able-bodied seniors can manage, but those with knee or balance issues should stay on the upper ghat area or watch from a riverside café. Many older travellers are happiest seeing the facade from the car or from a first-floor café opposite, then going only to the lower courtyards.
  • University of Allahabad (Places to visit · 1–2 hours) — The campus grounds are flat and spacious with plenty of shade from mature trees. A car can drop you inside the campus near key buildings. Benches are scattered about. This is a comfortable walk for most older travellers, though the distances between buildings are large.

Some walking — plan a break (8)

  • Allahabad Fort (Places to visit · 1.5–2 hours, including time on the walls) — The entry courtyard is level, but climbing the wall ramparts requires steps and can be steep in places. Much of the walking is on uneven surfaces. Seniors can see the main gate, the museum and the Ashoka Pillar on ground level, but exploring the walls fully may be tiring.
  • Durga Temple (Places of worship · 30–50 minutes) — The temple courtyard has uneven stone ground and some steps. The sanctum requires climbing a narrow staircase. Older travellers should be steady on their feet. An early visit with less crowding is more manageable.
  • Ganga Dawn Experience (Culture and craft · 1.5–2 hours) — The ghats involve steps and can be slippery, especially in early morning. The air is cool and damp. Older travellers should be steady and wear non-slip footwear. Going with a guide who knows the safe routes helps. The experience is worth the effort for most seniors.
  • Godaulia Bazaar (Shopping · 45 minutes to 1 hour casual browsing) — The bazaar is crowded and involves pushing through pedestrian traffic. The pavement is uneven in places. Seniors may find it tiring. Couples or families can split up to shop while one person rests nearby, or visit very early when it is quieter.
  • Katra Bazaar (Shopping · 45 minutes to 1.5 hours) — The bazaar is crowded and the lanes are narrow with uneven ground. There is no rest space, and pushing through crowds can be tiring. A shorter, early-morning visit is more comfortable than a long afternoon one. Guides or family members help navigate the lanes.
  • Khusru Garden (Places to visit · 1–1.5 hours) — The garden is mostly flat with gentle sloping terraces and pathways. There are benches and shade from mature trees. A car can drop you near the entrance, and the main attractions are accessible without long climbs. Reasonably comfortable for seniors.
  • Patalpuri Temple (Places of worship · 20–40 minutes) — There are steps down to reach the temple, and the interior space is confined. Some parts are quite dim and narrow. Older travellers should be steady on their feet and comfortable in tight spaces. Help from a guide or family member is useful.
  • Shastri Bridge (Places to visit · 30 minutes to 1 hour (viewing from the bridge)) — Walking the bridge is noisy and involves traffic and congestion. It is not particularly pleasant for older travellers. A better option is to view from the bridge's sides or photograph from a parked vehicle. Driving across is easier than walking.
