Set off in the dark, around half an hour before sunrise, and head north from Assi. As the sun comes up over the far bank, you will pass Tulsi Ghat, the striped steps of Kedar Ghat, bathers and priests at Dashashwamedh, and the palaces and temples above the water. Ask the boatman to hold the boat at a respectful distance from Manikarnika and remind everyone not to photograph cremations. Many boatmen will point out each ghat's story, so it helps to agree the language and route before you start.
Wrap up well in winter, when the river is cold and misty, and bring a thermos of tea. Keep phones and cameras on straps. Resist offers to stop at shops or 'weaving centres' after the ride unless you asked for it.
