Before you go
Visakhapatnam with elderly parents: what to know
- Kailasagiri is best reached by rope way if climbing is difficult; the park itself is level once you are at the top, with shaded seating and views. Avoid the peak afternoon heat by going early or late.
- Beach Road is a flat, level walk suitable for a slow afternoon stroll, especially in the late afternoon when the light is soft and crowds are less. The promenade has benches and a sea breeze.
- The INS Kursura Submarine Museum has steps to enter the submarine, so if climbing is an issue, the entry hall has photographs and displays of the vessel. The museum is compact and air-conditioned.
- Simhachalam Temple involves climbing a hill, and the temple floors are marble. Wear non-slip shoes or socks and go early when it is cooler. The views from the temple are worth the climb if you can manage it with a rest stop.
- Hire a car with a driver for the day. It gives you a cool place to rest between sights and avoids long walks in the heat. A day's hire costs roughly ₹800–₹1,500 depending on the car.
- Stick to bottled or filtered water. Pharmacies are common; note the nearest one to your hotel. Hospitals are well-equipped; Andhra Medical College and private hospitals are accessible from most areas.
- Visakhapatnam's climate is hot and humid most of the year. Carry a hat, sunscreen, light cotton clothing and electrolyte drinks. The sea breeze on Beach Road is cooling; use it as an afternoon refuge from the sun.
Easiest first
Places in Visakhapatnam sorted by walking effort
Easy on the legs (10)
- Araku Valley (day trip) (Places to visit · Full day (10–12 hours round trip including travel) or an overnight stay for a more relaxed pace) — The main sights, the Coffee Museum, Tribal Museum and viewpoints, involve only light walking, but the drive itself is long with hairpin bends through the Ghats; those prone to motion sickness should plan accordingly, and an overnight stay reduces the strain of a same-day round trip.
- Bheemili Beach and the Dutch Cemetery (Places to visit · 1.5–2.5 hours for the beach, lighthouse and cemetery together) — The beach and cemetery are on level, walkable ground; the lighthouse itself may have limited or no public climbing access, so check locally, and most visitors view it from outside rather than ascending it.
- Dharani Restaurant (Food and restaurants · 45–75 minutes) — A standard hotel restaurant with table seating and normal service; check whether the entrance and dining room have step-free access if travelling with someone who uses a wheelchair, as this can vary by hotel building.
- ISKCON Temple, Visakhapatnam (Places of worship · 30–60 minutes) — The temple sits on flat, open grounds with wide paths and no significant steps to the main hall, making it one of the more comfortable temple visits in the city; seating is generally available in the main hall during services.
- Kailasagiri (Places to visit · 1.5–2.5 hours) — The ropeway removes the need to climb the hill; the summit park itself is on fairly level ground with paved paths, shaded benches and a mini train, though the walk between viewpoints still covers some distance.
- Minerva Coffee Shop (Food and restaurants · 45–75 minutes for a meal) — A conventional sit-down restaurant with tables, chairs and normal restaurant service; no particular mobility challenges, and the menu's familiar South Indian dishes suit most dietary needs and preferences.
- Ramakrishna Beach (RK Beach) (Places to visit · 45–90 minutes for a walk; longer with the museums along the road) — The paved promenade is flat and shaded in parts, with benches at intervals along its length; stay on the paving rather than the soft sand, which is harder going and uneven near the waterline.
- Rushikonda Beach (Sports · 1.5–3 hours for water sports; 45–60 minutes for a beach walk) — The beach approach and main stretch are level and easy to walk; water sports themselves are for those who are reasonably fit and comfortable in the sea, so most older visitors are better placed watching or walking than surfing or jet-skiing.
- TU 142 Aircraft Museum (Places to visit · 30–45 minutes) — Entry involves a short set of steps into the aircraft cabin rather than the steep ladders of the submarine museum nearby, making it a more comfortable option for those with limited mobility; the exhibition hall is at ground level throughout.
- Visakha Museum (Places to visit · 30–45 minutes) — The museum is a single-storey bungalow with level floors throughout and no significant stairs, making it one of the more comfortable indoor stops on Beach Road; seating is limited, so plan a steady pace rather than long stops.
Some walking — plan a break (5)
- INS Kursura Submarine Museum (Places to visit · 45–60 minutes) — The submarine itself is entered via steep internal ladders and low hatches typical of a working vessel, which are not manageable for everyone; the interior is not air-conditioned in the way a museum hall would be, so those with mobility or heat concerns may prefer the entry displays instead.
- Indira Gandhi Zoological Park (Places to visit · 2–4 hours) — The park is large and spread out, with paths that undulate through forest rather than a flat, compact layout; a battery-operated vehicle or golf-cart service is usually available for those who cannot walk the full grounds, so ask at the entrance.
- Simhachalam Temple (Places of worship · 1.5–2.5 hours including the approach) — The temple involves climbing and marble flooring that can be slippery, especially after ritual bathing of the deity or during rain; non-slip footwear or socks are worth carrying, and resting points exist along the approach for anyone who needs to pace the climb.
- Thotlakonda (Places to visit · 45–75 minutes) — The site involves walking on an open hillside with uneven ground and some mild gradient between structures; there is little shade, so a hat, water and a steady pace matter more here than at level city sights.
- Yarada Beach (Places to visit · 1.5–2.5 hours) — The beach itself is level and walkable, but reaching it involves a winding hill road with bends that can be uncomfortable for some passengers; a private car with a driver is more comfortable than a shared or self-driven trip on this stretch.
Lots of walking or steps — choose carefully (1)
- Borra Caves (day trip) (Places to visit · 1–1.5 hours inside the caves, plus travel time) — The descent involves a long staircase over uneven, often damp and slippery rock, with limited handrails in places and dim lighting; visitors with knee, balance or breathing concerns should think carefully before attempting the full descent, and may prefer to view the entrance area only.
