Before you go

Bhopal with elderly parents: what to know

  • The Upper Lake promenade is the safest and most pleasant place for a morning or evening walk. It is flat, open and easy on the knees.
  • Book a car and driver for the whole day. It gives you a cool place to rest between sights and avoids long, hot walks.
  • Plan a 2–3 hour midday rest at the hotel. Bhopal's afternoons are tiring even in winter, and the heat from March onwards is serious.
  • Stay near the Upper Lake or MP Nagar rather than in the old city bazaars. The newer areas have better hotels, lifts and quieter nights.
  • Museums (Bharat Bhavan, Museum of Man) are air-conditioned and comfortable. Save these for the hottest part of the day.
  • Sanchi is a wonderful day trip but is open and exposed. Bring a hat, sunscreen, water and a guide; avoid peak midday heat there.
  • Hospitals and pharmacies are concentrated near MP Nagar Road and the railway station. Note the nearest one to your hotel.

Easiest first

Places in Bhopal sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (12)

  • Arera Hill (Places to visit · 1–1.5 hours) — The main trails are gentle and shaded. There are places to sit and rest. Older travellers can enjoy the hill at a leisurely pace.
  • Govind Palace (Places to visit · 20–30 minutes) — The palace is small and manageable with no demanding physical requirements. Ground-level courtyards and light exterior walking are the main activities.
  • Lower Lake (Chhota Talab) (Places to visit · 45 minutes to 1.5 hours) — The paths around Lower Lake are flatter and quieter than Upper Lake's promenade, with good seating areas. The Kamlapati temple area involves some steps, but the lakeside walk itself is accessible for most ages.
  • Moti Lake (Motia Talab) (Places to visit · 45 minutes to 1 hour) — The paths around Moti Lake are short, flat and peaceful. This is one of the easiest of Bhopal's lakes for older travellers.
  • Regional Science Centre Bhopal (Places to visit · 1.5–2.5 hours) — The museum is modern and accessible, with elevators and level walking. Many exhibits can be engaged with while standing or sitting. Pacing is controllable.
  • Sadar Manzil (Places to visit · 30–45 minutes) — The grounds are generally flat and navigable. If interior access is permitted, some stairs may be involved, but the exterior and courtyard alone provide good views without physical strain.
  • Shahpura Lake (Places to visit · 1 hour) — The paths are flat and quiet, making this suitable for older travellers who prefer peace over major sights.
  • Shaukat Mahal (Places to visit · 30–45 minutes) — The grounds are walkable without demanding climbs. Some older visitors may find the interior stairs steep if access is available, but the exterior and courtyard can be enjoyed entirely at ground level.
  • Taj Mahal Palace (Places to visit · 30–45 minutes) — The grounds are accessible and relatively flat for walking around. There are no demanding stairs to see the exterior and courtyard. Benches and shaded areas are available if rest is needed.
  • Taj-ul-Masajid (Places to visit · 45 minutes to 1.5 hours) — The courtyard is level and open. Entering the main mosque requires removing shoes and means stepping on cool marble. Some older visitors may find sitting on the floor challenging; bringing a small cushion or sitting near the walls helps.
  • Upper Lake (Bhojtal) (Places to visit · 1–2 hours) — The lakeside promenade is flat and paved, with benches along the way. There are temples on the shore that require climbing steps, but you can enjoy the lake without entering them. A peaceful spot for older travellers.
  • Van Vihar National Park (Places to visit · 1–2 hours) — The walking trails are well-maintained and shaded in places. There are benches along the way. A leisurely morning walk of 1–1.5 hours is manageable for most ages.

Some walking — plan a break (8)

  • Bharat Bhavan (Places to visit · 1.5–2.5 hours) — The building involves some stairs and walking, but galleries are well-lit and climate-controlled. Benches and seating are available throughout. Pacing yourself through one section at a time is manageable.
  • Bhimbetka (Places to visit · Full day: 1 hour drive each way, plus 2–3 hours on site) — The site involves climbing between shelters and uneven stone ground. Some shelters are accessed by steep stone steps. Older travellers should evaluate their comfort with climbing before committing to a full site tour. A guide can suggest viewing the main shelters only.
  • Chowk Bazaar (Shopping · 1–2 hours) — The bazaar is crowded and involves narrow lanes and uneven ground. Older travellers can enjoy the atmosphere from the main streets or with a short guided walk focused on a few shops or tea houses rather than full immersion.
  • Itti Market (Shopping · 30–45 minutes) — The lanes are narrower than main streets but more manageable than the deepest parts of Chowk Bazaar. Older travellers can navigate a section of it easily.
  • Jama Masjid (Places to visit · 20–30 minutes) — Reaching the mosque involves walking up through the bazaar, which can be crowded and uneven. Once at the mosque, the courtyard is level. Internal stairs exist but most of the space is easily walkable.
  • Lakshmi Narayan Temple (Places of worship · 30–45 minutes) — There are stairs to reach the main chamber, and the interior can be crowded. Older visitors may find the queues and congestion tiring, especially during peak hours. Early visits on weekdays are more manageable.
  • Museum of Man (Places to visit · 1–2 hours) — The museum is accessible, with climate-controlled galleries and good lighting. Benches are available for rest. Some exhibits require bending or looking up, but pacing is fully in the visitor's control.
  • Sanchi (Places to visit · Full day: 1 hour drive each way, plus 3–4 hours on site) — The walk around the stupa compound is on uneven grass and stone. There are benches and shaded areas. Older travellers can see the main monument without climbing, but the site involves walking on uneven ground. Guides are available and helpful.
