Before you go
Bhubaneswar with elderly parents: what to know
- Visit temples at opening time when courtyards are less crowded and the day is cooler. Lingaraj Temple in early morning is best.
- Carry water, a hat and sunscreen. Afternoons are very hot and humid from March to September; stay indoors during these hours if possible.
- The old city temples have uneven stone floors and occasional steps. Wear comfortable walking shoes and carry a stick if mobility is a concern. Brahmeswara and Ananta Vasudeva temples are more level than Lingaraj.
- The Udayagiri and Khandagiri caves involve climbing and uneven paths. If in doubt about mobility, skip these and instead visit Dhauli (a shorter, easier site with views) or explore the museums.
- Hire a car and driver for the full day to avoid long walks between temples and to have a cool place to rest. Autos and shared taxis can be unpredictable.
- Choose a hotel with a lift, good air-conditioning, and easy access for your car. Satya Nagar and Nayapalli areas are easier for seniors than the narrow lanes of the old city.
- Hospitals and pharmacies are concentrated near Satya Nagar and Nayapalli. Note the nearest clinic to your hotel.
Easiest first
Places in Bhubaneswar sorted by walking effort
Easy on the legs (9)
- Balasore Beach (Places to visit · 3–4 hours including travel) — The beach is flat and accessible. Cars can drive close to the sand. Facilities are basic: no resorts, no formal restaurants nearby. This is best for those comfortable with simplicity and who do not need modern amenities.
- Bindu Sagar Lake (Places to visit · 30 to 45 minutes) — The ghats have steps, and the perimeter walk is flat but can have uneven paving. There are benches around the lake. Older travellers can sit and observe without needing to walk the entire perimeter, and a car can park nearby.
- Brahmeswara Temple (Places of worship · 20 to 30 minutes) — The temple is small and requires minimal climbing. The surrounding lanes are uneven, so wear footwear with good grip. There is limited seating nearby, so this is best for those comfortable standing for 20 minutes.
- Keshab Dev Temple (Places of worship · 20 to 30 minutes) — The temple is compact and does not require extended standing. A car can drop you nearby. Local guides can help navigate the lanes.
- Nandankanan Zoo (Culture and craft · 2–3 hours) — The zoo is flat and well-paved, with benches and shade in many areas. It is a comfortable walk for older visitors, though the full circuit is long. You can hire a battery-operated vehicle or golf cart to cover more ground with less walking.
- Parinirvana Temple (Places of worship · 20 to 30 minutes) — The temple grounds are mostly flat, with perhaps a few gentle steps. There is seating in the meditation areas. The peaceful environment and minimal walking make it suitable for older visitors.
- Pipli (Places to visit · 1–1.5 hours, plus travel) — Pipli is a small village with narrow, uneven lanes. A car can stop near the main shops and you can walk at your own pace. Walking the whole village is short; the challenge is the heat and the lack of shade.
- Raghurajpur Art Village (Places to visit · 1.5–2 hours, plus travel) — The village is compact and flat, with wide lanes. You can walk at your own pace and rest at any shop. Most artists' homes have seating areas where you can watch and sit. There is no significant climbing or long distances.
- Rajarani Temple (Places of worship · 30 to 45 minutes) — The temple sits in a flat, well-maintained park with shade trees and benches. There are a few steps to the platform, and the interior involves some uneven paving, but overall it is less strenuous than Lingaraj. A car can drop you near the entrance.
Some walking — plan a break (7)
- Ananta Vasudeva Temple (Places of worship · 30 to 40 minutes) — The temple platform has steps, and the interior involves navigating around devotees and uneven paving. Older travellers can see the exterior and courtyard from ground level without climbing. Benches are available in the grounds.
- Bhubaneswar Bazaar (Shopping · 1–2 hours) — The bazaar is crowded and involves uneven pavements and street-level crossings. For older visitors, early morning is far more manageable than afternoon. A car can drop you at the edge and you can walk the main lanes at your own pace.
- Chandaka Forest Sanctuary (Culture and craft · 2–3 hours, plus travel) — Jeep safaris are available, which are easier than walking. Walking paths are on level ground but through forest, with uneven terrain. A jeep safari is better for older visitors and those wanting to cover more ground.
- Cuttack (Places to visit · 2–3 hours, plus travel) — The fort has ramparts and some uneven ground, but cars can stop near the entrance. The old bazaar is narrow and crowded. Go early, when the bazaar is less busy and the temperature is cooler.
- Dhauli (Places to visit · 1.5–2 hours, plus travel) — There is a climb to the Shanti Stupa with steps and uneven surfaces, but cars can get close and the pace is unhurried. A car drop can leave you near the bottom of the stupa climb, and the pillar edict is accessible on mostly level ground. Rest areas are limited, so bring water.
- Lingaraj Temple (Places of worship · 45 minutes to 1.5 hours) — The inner courtyard and the main deity chamber involve stairs and uneven paving. Older travellers can see the outer temple and the spire from the perimeter wall without entering, and there are benches in the temple gardens. If climbing stairs, take your time and wear footwear with grip.
- Odisha State Museum (Places to visit · 2 to 3 hours) — The museum is air-conditioned and has sitting areas in each gallery, which makes it comfortable for older visitors. The layout can be confusing; ask staff for directions or hire a guide to focus on the most significant objects.
Lots of walking or steps — choose carefully (2)
- Khandagiri Caves (Places to visit · 2 to 3 hours, including the climb and rest) — The climb to the summit is steep, with uneven steps and exposed sections. Older travellers in good shape can manage it, but it is strenuous. Those uncomfortable with heights or with joint problems should consider viewing the lower caves and skipping the summit.
- Udayagiri Caves (Places to visit · 3 to 4 hours, including travel, exploration and rest) — The caves are accessed by climbing stone steps and navigating rocky terrain. Older travellers with good fitness can manage if they take their time. Those with joint or breathing issues may find the climb challenging. Guides can suggest shorter routes if needed.
