Before you go

Havelock Island (Swaraj Dweep) with elderly parents: what to know

  • The beaches are flat and accessible, with no stairs or uneven terrain. Radhanagar Beach and Elephant Beach are senior-friendly for swimming and rest.
  • Boat trips to Elephant Beach involve boarding a small vessel at the jetty. If you have mobility concerns, check the boarding steps with your boatman in advance; some boats have easier access than others.
  • Bring high-SPF sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat and a long-sleeved rash guard for the water. The sun here is strong even in winter, and the reflection off white sand and water intensifies it.
  • Hire a private auto or scooter with a driver for the day rather than relying on shared autos. It gives you flexibility, a resting place (the car), and avoids long waits between transport.
  • Stay hydrated: carry bottled water at all times, drink it regularly, and avoid relying on beach shack supply. A 2–3 hour beach day can leave you dehydrated without noticing.
  • Choose a hotel close to Radhanagar Beach or Govind Nagar to minimize travel time, and confirm it has a lift (if you are on a higher floor) and reliable hot water. Older properties can have plumbing inconsistencies.
  • See a doctor before your trip if you have conditions worsened by sun or heat (heart issues, uncontrolled blood pressure, certain medications). Havelock's climate is quite different from much of mainland India, and exertion or sun exposure can be a factor.

Easiest first

Places in Havelock Island (Swaraj Dweep) sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (9)

  • Beach No. 1 (Places to visit · 2–3 hours) — The approach is a short walk through local paths. The beach itself is sandy with gentle entry. Lack of shade and facilities is the main challenge; bring water and sun protection.
  • Govind Nagar Jetty (Places to visit · 30–60 minutes) — The jetty approach is mostly level, though the pier itself can be crowded and narrow. A car can drop you at the entrance, and you can sit in the terminal building while watching the activity.
  • Govinda Nagar (Places to visit · 1–2 hours for shopping and meals) — Mostly flat, paved, with shops and restaurants within walking distance. Older visitors can move at their own pace and rest in cafés or restaurants.
  • Krishna Nagar (Places to visit · 1–2 hours for walking and meals) — Quiet, flat paths and a slow pace make it very comfortable for older visitors. It is as peaceful as island neighbourhoods get.
  • Radha Nagar Village (Places to visit · 1–2 hours for a walk and a meal) — The village paths are mostly flat and paved. Rest areas include the small shops and cafés. Pace yourself and explore at leisure.
  • Radhanagar Beach (Beach No. 7) (Places to visit · 2–3 hours for swimming and sunbathing; half an hour just for photos) — The beach is gently sloping, entry is gradual and sandy underfoot, with good visibility in shallow water. There is no shade on the beach itself, so bring an umbrella or rent a beach hut. The approach path is flat and sandy.
  • Shyam Nagar (Places to visit · 1–2 hours for walking and meals) — Paths are flat and walkable. The pace is leisurely and the setting is quiet, which suits older visitors well.
  • Vejoy Nagar (Places to visit · 30–60 minutes of walking and sitting) — Flat lanes with minimal traffic make it manageable for older travellers. There is no formal infrastructure, so uneven surfaces and limited seating are trade-offs. A car can drop you and pick up later.
  • Vijayanagar Beach (Beach No. 5) (Places to visit · 2–3 hours for beach time; half an hour for photos) — The approach path is well-made and flat. The beach entry is gradual, sandy and safe for swimmers of all abilities. There is minimal shade, so bring a hat or umbrella.

Some walking — plan a break (10)

  • Beach No. 3 (Places to visit · 2–3 hours) — The beach has rocks and uneven footing. Entry into the water requires careful navigation. Older visitors should take time and wear protective footwear.
  • Elephant Beach (Places to visit · 2–3 hours for beach and basic trekking; 4–5 hours with full forest walk) — The beach walk is flat and sandy, suitable for most. The forest trek has uneven paths and occasional tree roots; it is not difficult but requires steady footing. Older visitors can enjoy the beach and skip the trek.
  • Kalapathar Beach (Places to visit · 2–3 hours for exploring and snorkelling) — The beach has significant rock sections; footing is uneven and entry into the water requires care. The rocky pools are scenic but require balance and confidence. Older visitors should take time and wear shoes with grip.
  • Mangrove Creek Kayaking (Culture and craft · 2–3 hours including transport and instruction) — Kayaking is low-impact and can suit older travellers if they have reasonable upper-body fitness and are comfortable being afloat in a single-seater kayak. The creeks are shallow and close to shore, so rescue is straightforward. Start with a shorter, guided trip.
  • Reef Snorkelling (Culture and craft · 3–4 hours for a half-day trip; 5–6 hours for a full day) — Snorkelling suits many older travellers who can swim and are comfortable in water, because you stay at the surface and do not need to equalize. A life jacket makes it easier. However, the boat ride and sun exposure are factors; start with a short trip.
  • Ritchie's Archipelago (Places to visit · 6–8 hours including boat travel, briefing and snorkelling) — The speedboat journey is 1–2 hours each way and can be rough. You then snorkel, which requires swimming and comfort in open water. Older travellers should consider their tolerance for boat motion and sun exposure before booking.
  • Scuba Diving (Dixon's Pinnacle, Jackson's Reef) (Culture and craft · 4–5 hours including boat time, briefing and two dives) — Scuba diving demands strength, equalization skills and comfort underwater. Older travellers who are active, fit and have relevant experience can dive, but this is not suited to most travellers over 65 without specialist medical clearance.
  • Shaheed Dweep (Neil Island) (Places to visit · Full day: 4–6 hours on the island plus ferry time; or half-day: 2–3 hours) — The ferry journey is 45 minutes and can be rough if there is swell. Once on the island, most attractions are accessible and involve minimal walking. Older travellers should avoid very rough seas and plan a half-day trip rather than a full day.
  • Swaraj Dweep Lighthouse (Places to visit · 1–1.5 hours round trip from Govind Nagar) — The walk from Govind Nagar is a few kilometres on a rough path with uneven surfaces and minimal shade. The lighthouse itself sits on a headland with steep drops on some sides. Most older travellers prefer viewing it from a distance or taking a short walk to the headland without climbing any structures.
  • Water Sports and Sea Walking (Culture and craft · Sea walking: 30–45 minutes; other activities: 15–30 minutes each) — Sea walking requires claustrophobia tolerance and comfort underwater, but you walk upright on the seabed and do not swim, so it suits some older travellers better than snorkelling or diving. Jet skiing and parasailing require physical fitness and comfort with speed.

Lots of walking or steps — choose carefully (1)

  • Trekking to Elephant Beach (Culture and craft · 3–4 hours including transport, trek and beach time) — The trek is on uneven forest floor with roots, rocks and mud. Older travellers with good hiking fitness and sturdy footwear can manage, but it is not recommended for those with joint issues or limited balance.
