Before you go
Kalimpong with elderly parents: what to know
- The town is built on gentle slopes, not steep grades like Darjeeling. Walking is easier, but paths can be uneven after rain. Wear sturdy shoes with good grip.
- Monasteries are peaceful but may involve a few stairs and uneven ground. Go early in the day when it is cooler, and take breaks. Most monks are welcoming to respectful visitors.
- The Main Bazaar is walkable and uncrowded compared to Darjeeling. Shop in the afternoon when it is quieter, rather than the busy morning.
- Hire a car and driver for monastery visits and day trips. Roads are narrow and winding, and a good driver makes the difference. It also lets you rest when tired.
- Plan one main activity per day: a monastery visit, or Dr. Graham's Homes, or a day trip. Afternoons should be rest time; the altitude and pace mean you tire more easily.
- Kalimpong's small-town feel means fewer hospitals and pharmacies than Darjeeling. Choose a hotel near the bazaar if you need quick access to services. Note the nearest chemist and clinic before you start sightseeing.
- Winter mornings are often cloudy until mid-morning. Dress in layers and be ready for sudden cloud cover. The afternoon light over the Teesta Valley is usually clearer.

- Dr. Graham's Homes (Places to visit · 1–1.5 hours for a guided visit) — The school grounds are generally level with some gentle slopes. If you have mobility concerns, confirm the layout of buildings before visiting, as some areas may involve stairs.
- Kalimpong Handloom Centre (Shopping · 45 minutes to 1.5 hours) — The showroom is indoors, air-conditioned or well-ventilated, with space to browse seated if needed. There are usually benches for customers to rest.
- Kalimpong Main Bazaar (Shopping · 1–1.5 hours for browsing; 30 minutes if you know what you want) — The bazaar is on level ground and can be navigated slowly. There are few places to sit, and it can feel crowded, so many older travellers enjoy it better on a weekday morning.
- Kumai Bridge (Places to visit · 20 to 45 minutes) — A short, nearly level walk. There is a road and a walkway on the bridge. Rest areas and benches are not provided, but you can pause safely on the bridge itself.
- Mirik Lake (Places to visit · 5 to 7 hours including travel) — The lake has a path around it, mostly level and easy to walk at your own pace. There are benches, cafés, and boat rides for those who do not want to walk. The town is compact and navigable.
- Prema Nurseries (Culture and craft · 1 to 1.5 hours) — The nursery has uneven paths and requires steady balance while walking among plants, but there are no stairs. Benches are scattered throughout. Most older travellers manage comfortably if they take their time and avoid peak heat.
- Shangrila Garden Nursery (Culture and craft · 30 minutes to 1 hour) — Nurseries in Kalimpong are on hillside plots, so expect some slopes and uneven ground. A car can usually drop you at the gate.
- St. Andrew's Church (Places to visit · 30–45 minutes) — The grounds are mostly level. There are a few steps into the church, but mostly it is comfortable to walk around.
- Tharpa Choeling Monastery (Places to visit · 30–45 minutes) — The monastery is at town level with no significant climbing. Level access within the courtyard.
Some walking — plan a break (8)
- Deolo Hill (Places to visit · 1–1.5 hours including walk and time at the top) — The walk involves a steady climb with steps and uneven paths, but the views reward the effort. Many older travellers with reasonable fitness manage it, especially if taken slowly.
- Durpin Monastery (Places to visit · 45 minutes to 1.5 hours including walk and time at the monastery) — The walk up Durpin Hill is steady but not too steep, and there are rest points along the way. Many older travellers manage it comfortably at their own pace. Wear shoes with grip because the path can be uneven.
- Kali Ghat (Places to visit · 45 minutes to 1.5 hours) — The descent to the ghat involves a steep path with steps. Older visitors with knee problems may find the descent tougher than the ascent. A walking stick helps. Seating is limited at the ghat itself, but quiet spots exist on the way down.
- Kalimpong Siddheswara Kali Temple (Places of worship · 30–45 minutes including climb) — The walk up involves stairs and an uneven path. An older traveller with reasonable fitness can manage it, but there are few resting places on the way.
- Pedong (Places to visit · 4 to 5 hours including travel) — Pedong itself is at a moderate elevation, and many walks from there are gentle. Some paths involve steady grades but not steep climbs. Older visitors can enjoy the surroundings at their own pace.
- Relli Ghat (Places to visit · Half-day: 2–3 hours including travel and time at the site) — The site itself is on level ground by the water, but the road is rough and the journey by jeep or car can be bouncy. Those uncomfortable with rough roads may find the journey more demanding than the destination.
- Rinchingpong Monastery (Places of worship · 1 to 1.5 hours) — The approach involves a climbing path with some steps at the end. Older visitors manage it slowly, resting partway if needed. The monastery buildings themselves are mostly level, with a few interior stairs to secondary shrines.
- Teesta River Valley Viewpoint (Places to visit · 45 minutes to 1.5 hours) — The walk involves a steady uphill path with no handrails. Some older travellers manage it slowly over 30–40 minutes; those with knee concerns may find the descent tougher than the ascent. A walking stick helps. Seating is limited at the viewpoint itself.
Lots of walking or steps — choose carefully (2)
- Teesta Gorge (Places to visit · 4 to 6 hours including travel from Kalimpong town) — Access varies by location. Some viewpoints are reachable by short, easy walks; others require steeper descents. A guide can suggest the most suitable viewpoints. Most older visitors manage some viewpoints but should avoid the most strenuous access routes.
- Zang Dhok Palri Phodang (Places to visit · 2–2.5 hours including walk and time in the monastery) — The approach road is steep and the final path to the monastery involves uneven steps through forest. An older traveller with steady knees can manage it, but this is not a gentle walk. Allow extra time and rest on the steps. Local guides or a younger family member alongside helps.
